'18 AL OLB Matthew Flint (Former UT commit 8/2/17)

I think we end up 5-7 with a few unknown to us fans highly ranked guys coming in during the season. Also believe a few guys will get big bumps like Antonutti, Harris, Warren, and one of those FL CB's

Penix is a 4 star already on rivals, wouldn't be surprised to see him get bumped also. Of course, I was certain Butler and Page would get bumped last year and it never happened

While it is possible for players to be undervalued and overvalued, in this scenario it's all about fit. And flint is a perfect fit in this defense

I can buy that and was actually thinking along that line. The "spur" position is one where you want a LB-S hybrid. This guy has the right build for that and the right speed and quickness if his posted times are accurate.

My point was that some folks here (not sure about the one I responded to) make a really big deal out of it when a 5* commits and talk about class rankings a lot... then say that stuff doesn't matter when a lower ranked player commits.

This class is on a trajectory to finish in the top 15 but probably not the top 5 on the recruiting sites. I don't care as long as Jones starts winning when it matters most. Some people though make a big deal out of the recruiting awards. Frankly, as nice as I think it is that UT puts some guys in the NFL, I don't care about that nearly as much as I care about UT winning.

Out of all the superlatives Jones' lists for the program... the one missing is the one I care about most.

Some three star recruits seem to be overlooked. Their film and stats look way too good to actually be a 3 star. Matthew Butler and Jacques Jones come to mind. I do think recruiting services miss a good bit. Tim Jordan may prove to be another example. However, that being said, it has been proven that stars matter. Teams that win recruit at a high level. Bama, Clemson, OSU, FSU etc. If we want to be able to really compete with Bama, or FSU and OSU if we make the playoffs, we have to recruit at a high level. I don't know if Flint is a great player or not, so this has nothing to do with him, but our class that was landing 4 stars earlier is now landing a lot of 3 stars. Hopefully the coaches actually believe these guys are better and aren't missing on higher rated players theyd rather have.

That being said tho, several of our 3 star players are 4 stars on a least one service so in that case, who knows who is right? What we do know is that we don't get the OSU bump like teague did so we won't see Flint jump 100 spots tomorrow

I've pointed it out for a while now but many don't really want to hear it. The recruiting services miss more guys that are 3* and below than they give 4/5* to. BUT... the guys they give 4/5* to are pretty good bets to have the talent to match the rating.

I think there is a temptation to get too caught up in it without considering the purpose of the recruiting sites. They aren't there to be accurate... but to make money off of subscribers. And the reaction of fans assures that they are never really held accountable. A highly rated guy who does poorly is called a bust... it is "his" fault. Sometimes folks will say he was overrated but they don't really question the recruiting site generally. When lower rated guys do well, fans are happy that they were underrated but again don't really question the recruiting sites.

The recruiting sites are paid entertainers. Its good to keep that in view whenever you look at recruits.

OTOH, you're probably aware that there a non-public recruiting firms that specialize in profiling players. Programs pay them for the information. It almost never goes public but has tremendous bearing on which kids are "takes".

Since I value your opinion, I'm glad to see this.
However, I do believe that a consensus Top 10 finish would be HUGE for our program, perception and buzz wise.
I hope we finish strongly with a lot of 4 stars and maybe one more 5. Go Vols! Beat Tech!

The buzz the program needs is wins. An unexpectedly GOOD finish as opposed to unexpectedly bad finishes and bad losses.

Penn State was in the Rose Bowl last year and won their division over OSU and Michigan and the Big 10. They beat OSU.... all this in Franklin's 3rd year in Happy Valley. They had good but not great recruiting rankings but then overachieved. Now they sit at 3rd according to 247 with an average player rating of over 90... which means they'll probably hang around the top when all is said and done.

Winning gave them "buzz".

IMO, coaching matters more in football than in any other sport. And football is such a scheme specific sport.

Most people consider Joe Montana (maybe Brady now) the greatest quarterback in NFL history. But I promise you had he not ended up in that Bill Walsh then revolutionary WCO, he would've been an average joe with his average measurable. There are countless examples of that.

Its easy to get caught up in rankings but you just have to have confidence in the coaching staff. Take solace in the fact that they've identified guys who they feel will fit their scheme, and they like them enough that they're aggressively pursuing them and offering them a spot in our class this early in the process.

I really like the 4.57 electronic time from Atlanta Nike, plus excellent student and an EE. Can we back count any?

Does anyone find it hilarious and yet rather odd that Scout lists a player's 24/7 composite ranking?
