Last Saturday, Rivals100 athlete Kyler McMichael visited Tennessee for the sixth or seventh time just in the last two years. Four days later, word leaked that the Great Atlanta Christian School (Ga.) standout planned to make his college choice sometime on Friday. Good news for Tennessee? Not exactly.
The Vols have recruited McMichael hard since offering the 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect last March. Theyve been an attractive option for McMichael ever since, and they didnt lose a beat when they had a coaching change in the secondary, as the future defensive back already had a strong relationship with Charlton Warren when Tennessees new coach was at North Carolina.
Hes been recruiting me for a long time, McMichael said after Orange Carpet Day on Saturday. Hes very sincere. Hes a great guy. I could learn a lot from him. So why arent the Vols particularly confident heading into Fridays decision? The timing, mostly. McMichael just released his Top 6 a week ago, and indicated plans to stay overnight at each one of his finalists this summer to get a good feel for them before making a September decision. Hes done that with a couple of his suitors already, but McMichael did not spend the night on Rocky Top last weekend.
Furthermore, while McMichael has tripped to Tennessee twice this spring Saturday and for a practice in April hes visited Clemson and Georgia multiple times this month. Both the Tigers and Bulldogs, as well as Alabama, have also offered the idea of allowing McMichael to play some offense or return punts in college after he tallied nearly 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns playing running back as a junior for GAC. McMichael said Saturday that the Vols were recruiting him strictly as a cornerback, though. At this point, the deck appears to be stacked against Tennessee. Still, the Vols cant be counted out completely on Friday, as no one has a true beat on where McMichael is going right now.
The people. Theyre very sincere. Its very lively. Its not too far away from my house. Its great up here, he said Saturday. When asked what Tennessees message was to him, he said bluntly, potentially coming in and starting. Theyre losing a lot of DBs, and they dont have a lot right now, so they said theyre going to bring in some high school DBs and hes going to potentially be starting, so that really stood out to me, McMichael explained.
