In February, Tennessee was the first SEC school to extend a scholarship to Chatman, who now holds more than 40 offers including Alabama, Michigan, Miami and Florida State. The Vols tried for months to get the Peach State defensive lineman on campus, and after offering Rome (Ga.) High teammate and LSU commit Ja'Quon Griffin a scholarship Friday, Chatman and Griffin — best friends and a pronounced package deal — decided to visit Tennessee for the first time.
“I heard it was a nice stadium and a nice campus, so after everybody told me multiple times I just had to come up and visit. It was awesome,” Chatman said. “Everything. Awesome. All the coaching staff showed that they really wanted me. They made me feel like I was family.”
Before leaving campus Saturday, Chatman openly acknowledged Tennessee “definitely” gave him something to think about moving forward.
Now that he’s officially back on the market, the Vols are suddenly a major player for the defensive lineman, with Miami and Georgia (should the Bulldogs finally offer) legitimate options as well. Chatman said UT coach Brady Hoke gave him “a lot of attention” Saturday, and the 6-foot-2, 264-pound prospect detailed his Tennessee ties, too.
“When I first got (the UT offer), I was just ecstatic,” Chatman said. “My sister-in-law went to Tennessee. My brother, he was real happy, too. They’re big Tennessee fans, so everybody in my family is really happy.” Will that factor into his future decision? “My family is comfortable with whatever I choose,” he said. “But they like Tennessee.”
