'18 GA QB Trevor Lawrence

You only have to be a threat for the read option. Our offense is more.

That's my point, TL won't be a threat. As some are comparing adjusting the offense, they did last year because Dobbs completion percentage past 6 yards was less than 40%. He probably gets a shot in the NFL as a WR, needs weight to be a RB but he can scoot.

Heard Callahan I think it was say that he believes Jones may indeed be higher on the board because of how he fits the offense better. Tifwiw.

I get that and I also think Jones is special. I think he would be great in our offense. But, Lawrence may end up having that really special kind of skill set. Possibly the best since Peyton for us. I would like to think that if Trevor really wanted to come here, that Butch would tweak his offense to fit specific needs.

I wouldnt be advocating this if it were not the best QB in the class.

Baylor runs like 4 different plays and plays against typically inferior competition. When they play legit squads they usually get exposed. They're players also get exposed in the NFL.

Butch's offense though a spread still has many pro principles.

Say what you will about Baylor and their offence beeing gimmicky...it's a heck of a gimmick. Art Briles is one of the best offensive minds in the game today. TCU's defense was pretty legit in 2014 (ask Hugh Freeze) and Baylor managed to hang 61 on them.

Their bowl game this year was impressive too. Basically using a wildcat offense all game and rotating WRs, RBs, and the QB taking snaps, they ran all over UNC for 645 yards. I know UNC didn't exactly have a killer run D (though their DC did win an award last year), but 645 yards!? On a couple variations of wildcat plays nonetheless.

You've gotta give Baylor's offensive staff credit, man. They know what they're doing and they're doing it damn well.

Absolutely understand the sentiment, but Baylor's 2015 team YPA was only 3 yards more than Dobbs. Dobbs actually had a higher completion percentage, too. The perception is drastically different, though.

In all fairness they were playing with a WR at QB to finish season.

My point is that he only has to be a threat in the Read Option run play. We don't have to run the read option run, our offense is much more than just that...

A difference of 3 YPA is pretty significant.

Very true and Dobb's completion % is a little misleading. He throws a lot of short passes under 6-8 yards and 4-5 of those are when the WR or RB goes in motion and he tosses it forward to them as they run by. Those count as completed passes. Would love to see his % on passes over 10 yards.

I think DeBord would absolutely love to have Lawrence. No doubt the offense would be tweaked to fit his style. There are more pro-style qualities in this offense than I think fans realize.

He's also every bit as athletic as Kay and Collaros were and with a much better overall skill set.

Tennessee fans are fearful of a pro-style QB because of their experience with Worley. The bottom line there is Worley was not a high level talent or a good SEC QB. He basically lived up to his billing coming out of HS which was that of a mid to low end 3 star talent.

Excellent post... Especially the first paragraph. We haven't seen what we would/could do with a talented pro style QB.

We couldn't protect Worley either. He actually did pretty good when he wasn't being sacked.

To be fair, the OL did a great job of protecting him in 2013. In 2014, we had one of the least experienced lines in school history though. That OL necessitated a mobile QB.

Georgia 2014 comes to mind here (except that he missed part of the game due to injury). He was on fire towards the end of the game. Too late, though.

TL could be a once in a generation QB. Already a 1.000 on 247 and the #1 overall player in the country. He will be a superstar.

Because he is. One is an athlete who is a solid QB, the other is a true star in the making.

The hang up here for everyone is Jones likely fits this offense better in its current form.

Watch the film, Lawrence is mobile enough to run our O. I'd go as far as saying hes perfect for it. You don't have to run a killer 40 or be the most agile to run the read option. If the end crashes you're getting yards. And Lawrence is apparently also one of the smartest kids in the country. I think he's a no brainer over Jones.

He's frail now. To run the read option you got to be able to take hits. He'll need to really bulk up to withstand the grind IMO.

I still take either one whomever commits first unless I just knew TL would come. TL is my preference but not enough to risk losing Jones if he was ready. You want to be sure to have a guy that want HJ flip you. Set up for you Morans.

Both guys need S&C in a red shirt year. It will be fine plus they have some more years to grow before they get here.

I also think TL spaces our QBs out nicely. We are kind of jammed up right now, which is a great problem to have, but tough with recruiting.
