Some of you guys are looking at these prospects in the same vein as you would as if they were a Butch Jones offer... Need to stop that. Pruitt and his staff are football guys. They see something in this kid they think they can work with. Let it play out

Hopefully. But the reality is we are so bad off on the OL that we might just need ready bodies.

I trust the staff.

The recent JUCO OL offers speak loudly of what Pruitt thinks of our OL. He sees the glaring issues. In all honesty, what Butch has done to us concering the OL is far worse than what Dooley did in 2012.

Sad.

I would trust JP's offers and evals well beyond Butch's. Pruitt has been recruiting and evaluating elite players for 10+ years. Butch still had that MAC Conference recruiting mentality. Yea he got some nice pieces here but he did benefit from some really good instate talent that most would have ended up here regardless and recruits who's family were longtime VFL's. Butch made a living on bringing in majority 3 star players that weren't VFL legend recruits or instate life long Vol fans. And also lost a lot of potential starters who left because of him before they even got the chance to compete for a job. My breaking point on trusting Butch was the complete misuse of Kamara and how he catered to Hurd. That was my breaking point. Kamara and Kelly absolutely should have been 1 and 2 but he was hell-bent on catering to Hurd. Anyone that watched or QB's play could tell they were not getting coached up. Even Dobb's really never had much consistency but still won games despite the lack of QB coaching. Imagine the numbers Dobb's could have put up with the staff we have now. We have pieces in place that could easily get us to 8-9 wins next season. I don't buy the cupboard is bare. Butch got some good but not very few elite players. But good enough and better than UK, Vandy, SCarol and Mizzou. Those are 4 wins we should have most years plus 3 gimme OOC wins every year with 1 good OOC game yearly. There is just no excuse to go 0-8 in the conference no matter what the injury situation is. Being 3-5 the last 2 years vs those 4 teams should never happen. Don't see that trend continuing under JP.

JUCO olmen are exactly what we need, especially with Mays likely passing on us (which seems more likely as dec 20th rolls around - he still intends to be an EE afaik).

the luck of having Sutton/Dobbs/JRM in '13 plus a huge '14/'15 legacy class and the talent rise in the st of TN is what really saved butch's job. he would've been fired in 2016 if he had to recruit under normal conditions. we saw what his class looked like without major playing time to offer or a massive legacy class to help him recruit. it wasn't pretty. fact is TN recruits itself and Butch liked to take credit for things he really had no business taking credit for. still can't believe our AD gave that man an extension to 2020.

Especially with the loss of Hall, Boulware, and Jones. Those were three solid guys who should've all been back next year.

OV this weekend...

THE SKINNY: Tennessee’s previous staff offered the JUCO offensive tackle, but Pruitt & Co., has convinced Johnson to give the Vols a real look. Interestingly, Johnson will not enroll early. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound offensive lineman has already taken visits to Missouri and Arkansas.

Typically, they have more flexibility to be EE’s, unless grades are still an issue.

Slideshow showed Johnson apparently at a Va. Tech camp. Looks to be fully developed compared to others in pics.

Correct. Dooley left Jones 3- 4 future NFL OLinemen, including 1 first round pick. Jones has left Pruitt an absolute mess with only one shining spot, one top notch OLineman who can play at a high SEC level.

Nah it’s just that JUCO OL are often a bit of a crapshoot (moreso for OTs than OGs) and we’ve had bad luck lately.

So people are understandably cautious.

I do get that but recruiting as a whole is a complete crap shoot. I would still take my chances with a couple JUCO guys for immediate help than having to throw in more TR FR Olineman. And neither of the JUCO guys or the Cal Grad transfer are lityle. Pruitt definitely want's the 300+ Olineman unlike the sub 290 most of Butch's were. That's just as much of the OLine issue as anything else.We weren't big or physical up front and the better physical Defense's exposed us regularly.
