Why are we competing with Marshall, Memphis, UTSA, and Georgia State for recruits this early? Is recruiting starting off that bad again this year? I've noticed several offers with less than stellar offer lists. Hope this is not a sign of things to come.

GERALD'S SCOUTING REPORT
"Gerald comes off the edge very quickly, flattens around the tackle well and is a big hitter. He's adept at beating linemen with speed, but he's also solid off of contact. He's not the longest end in the world but his explosion and acceleration to the football allows him to close suddenly.
"He's good in pursuit and can string out the run as well and he has sneaky power when he plays with leverage. He's a plug and play guy for the Vols."
HOW WILL GERALD FIT IN WITH THE VOLS?
After landing several versatile inside-outside linemen, Tennessee needed a true edge rusher and Gerald fits the bill. Like Farrell said, he projects as an instant impact guy, and with the Vols’ depth concerns at end, he should come to Tennessee with a chance to play immediately.
At 6-foot-3, 255-pounds, Gerald’s best attributes are speed and motor. He’s quick off the edge and plays with a constant aggression. One of the first coaches to recognize his talent was Antelope Valley’s Perry Jehlicka, who actually tipped off UT’s staff about Gerald this spring. Gerald didn’t have a single college scholarship offer coming out of Florence, South Carolina, but after a summer in his JUCO weight program, his potential was noticeable right away — even in offseason scrimmages.
“We were watching a scrimmage, and they don’t have regular practice jerseys but he was a kid who stuck out immediately,” Jehlicka said. “He’s long, he’s big, he’s fast, he’s strong. It doesn’t surprise me a bit that he’s going to commit to an SEC school.”
Gerald’s first college game came against Antelope Valley, and the defensive end finished the afternoon with two sacks, four tackles for loss a forced fumble and two more quarterback hits.
“I just thought he was a dominant player,” Jehlicka said. “He was totally dominating the line of scrimmage. I even mentioned it to a coaching friend of mine at Tennessee, and said, ‘I don’t know if you guys are recruiting this kid or not, but he’s a heck of a football player.’ “They’re our first non-conference game again (this year). Maybe he can sit out now since he’s going to Tennessee,” Jehlicka said, jokingly. “No. We look forward to playing against top players and obviously he’s a great player.”
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TENNESSEE?
The magical combo of Walt Wells + Brady Hoke continues.
Tennessee's OL/DL coaching duo was instrumental in landing Litaker, Emerson and now Gerald — all three major defensive pieces in Tennessee’s 2018 class.
With five defensive linemen now on board, Tennessee hopes to add one more traditional edge rusher. Azeez Ojulari tops the list, but the Vols are in a heated battle for the U.S. Army All-American with Georgia, Auburn and Alabama.
Other potential options for the final spot include Richard Jibunor, Nick Fulwider and Caleb Kelly.
Defensive tackle PJ Mustipher is another intriguing name to watch — especially since the 4-star prospect is set to visit Tennessee again on July 20.
Hate it to say but his combination of size and speed reminded me of Barnett. JC OL are probably not very strong, but he got to the QB by speed and by bull rush. I believe he also played inside on a few players. You don't see a whole lot of that from speed rushers.
