kind of agree but you cant measure a walk on's heart and how hard they want it for being overlooked

Reason for concern? Possibly... but maybe Jumper is another Nick Reveiz type player. Either way, I'd say Cecil Cherry is licking his chops to get in here next year and compete for a spot that's definitely going to be there for the taking next year.

I was sitting pretty close to his workout group for the final open practice. He appeared to be out working everyone in his group. If that is what kind of effort he has given all camp. Then yes he is worthy of getting that spot.

I think its good for the program for guys like Gilliam, Jumper and Williams to be fighting for playing time. Tells me that the coaches have created an environment of competition where everyone is judged on their production and the most productive players see the field. Jumper is a talented athlete but probably not as athletically gifted as those 4*'s mentioned earlier. He is however most likely more talented between the ears and as a result has learned where to be and what to do at MLB more quickly than the others once again proving that there's more to football than 40 time and bench press reps.

Tell this to Memphisvol87. He obviously didn't get the memo.

I don't know why people are surprised to see this. There is no depth... 5-7 is very possible again.

Not true..We have depth, just lots of talented, full of potential FR depth.5-7 is possible but equally as possible is 6-6 and with some breaks and younger guys developing quicker than expected even 7-5. No way do I expect 7 or more wins and am a realist. I know next yr and the yr after is when we should start seeing 9+ wins again and competing for SEC Championships but younger guys developing and gaining confidence this yr will go a long way in determining how quickly we get back. So I really expect us to be a 6-7 win team with 7 being on the higher side with breaks and who knows how injuries will affect us, hopefully lack of that then injuries with our opponents. Just never know when a starting QB or numerous injuries like GA and UF had last yr that can significantly alter how games go. Ask Mizzou, they caught many leams last yr at the right time that were depleted with injuries. And I don't wish injuries on any team but its part of football and can destroy teams seasons. But Butch's teams have always improved yr one to yr two. I know its a different animal in the SEC but getting to a bowl is a very realistic goal.

It's just incredible the lengths people will go to put a positive spin on a walk-on being in the 2 deep at middle linebacker. Despite the great recruiting, we still have serious depth issues. Too many people look at the depth chart and conclude that the freshmen and walk ons that are in the 2 deep must mean those players are incredibly talented and SEC ready, when in reality it most likely means there wasn't real competition at their position when they arrived, which means the depth is still in bad shape. Things will be much better next year imo, but this year might be rough at times.

This is good for our program, demonstrates the opportunity to play at Tennessee , working hard and doing things the right way will earn playing time.

You guys can search for stats and reasons all day long but if we see jumper or max Arnold on the field then I'll be really disappointed. I know one class doesn't magically fix depth but I'm not looking for Dooley like solutions either. I hope this is a motivational type tactic and also disguising our game plan.

I agree we don't want a quarter of our starters to be walkons, not everyone can be diamonds in the rough but now more than ever guys fall through the cracks all the time. Either being the team they play on that doesn't get much exposure or is just a bad team, guys who's parents couldn't afford for them to go to all these camps, injuries could be another reasoning. But definitely possible for walkons to be just as talented as 3-5 star guys..Nick Reviez, Kelly Washington, Sunseri at Ala was a walkon and was one of their best defensive players on a team loaded with 5* guys. The guy a few yrs ago at Texas Tech that was a walkon and won the job and played well. It's definitely not the norm but not unheard either.

* Finished his high school career with 251 tackles, 39 TFL, 22 sacks, 2 interceptions, caused 5 fumbles, recovered 2 fumbles and blocked 1 FG in his high school career.

* Finished his senior season with 131 tackles, 19 TFL, eight sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal

Even if it was in a small classification, those are pretty impressive #s. Might be a diamond in the rough, after all. Guess we'll see soon enough.

Baylor is actually in the large private school division which some think is the SEC of Tennessee high school football. He was a 2 time All State in that division, which is rarely achieved. He was also selected to All-State all divisions his senior year.

While doing a post grad year in NJ last fall, the McCarthy report, a recruiting service which focuses only on football in NJ, ranked him as the top ILB in the state of NJ last fall. He had 4-5 D1 offer last year before enrolling at UT in January.

Jumper appears very quick and powerful with good control of his body. I didn't know who Jumper was, but he caught my eye in practice videos. I wondered why I had never heard more than a brief mention of him. No homo...

Try to find information about players before you throw them under the bus. By the way, remember that a certain CB from North Carolina was a 2* when Tennessee recruited him and everyone seems to be OK with him as a player. He is also listed as a backup on the 2-Deep Roster.

So you both agree and kind of proved VOLINVONORE's point....

But the freshmen have lots of stars. I saw it on the internet.

Good observation...reports on him in high school and early buzz here has him as an athlete...pure and simple...if he combines that with football smarts and instincts...we're not talking spunky, overachiever story here.

I can't believe people on here are questioning the coaches, and questioning Colton's ability. His film looks good, but I am not a registered VN scout. This kid is a legacy and chose to walk on and pay out of his own pocket to give his all for UT, but we got jack wads and feeble minded fools freaking out.

When this kid walked on I said I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the 2 deep. I saw him play some at Baylor and he is very very athletic.

Jumper is another example of recruits who are under-the-radar types who end up excelling in college. You just never know how a player will react to the demands of Div. I football. Many like Jumper step up and surprise. Our coaches definitely saw something in his ability. Jumper and the other FRs in this class are what is making this season so interesting. Who will and who will not??
