every team has it problems, it just espn like to show ours more than everyone elses. I'm ready to see a negative article about Pete Caroll running a bad program because 6 of his starters are going to get kicked off because they are to dumb to pass there classes. then we got steve spurrier talking trash about us and then got two more of his players suspended for smoking. Every team has there problems, I'm just tired of hearing everyone talk about ours.

Southern California is a tough freakin' school...

And I'm sick of hearing about the ESPN conspiracy.

I'm with you Milo. The ESPN bias thing is way overused.

Georgie, you don't remember when ESPN did the "Outside the Lines" thingy for a MONTH about the academic issue with Linda Bensel-Meyers while the other headlines on their site were about a student at Nevada getting stabbed, some players at Colorado getting busted for drugs and various other sordid deeds at various other schools? Don't you remember the greatest QB in the history of football getting shafted out of the Heisman because of ESPN's politicking? Maybe you don't. I do.

:espn: [/quote]
Here we go again . . . I get killed every time this comes up.

I remeber all of that. The Bensel-Meyers thing was hot for the same reason that all the Clarett stuff was hot - we'd just won a MNC. The Heisman thing may have a little validity, but overall I just don't think ESPN systematically is trying to hold down any one particular school.

For the last few years I've lucky enough to be in a position where I got to meet and speak with a lot of analysts and coaches and I've asked a couple of ESPN analysts specifically about this. They all just roll their eyes and tell me that they hear that all the time from EVERY fan base.

I for one don't agree with the conspiracy thing. I'm not trying to preach here but there is a selective perception. You notice more about your team since its your team. ESPN at times has been very positive about UT. I think they jump on any team at the top for a long time. If USC stays up there, you'll hear more about them.

If I remember correctly, ESPN broke the Tutorgate thing. It was about ratings more than getting UT. They had a "hot" story and wrung every bit out of it.

The real reason I don't buy a conspiracy theory is because I live where too many people see one that isn't there. Many Bama fans believe that everyone is out to get them. They scan the headlines for any hint of a slam. They ignore evidence to the contrary and magnify anything that supports the conspiracy theory.

So, no offense but when I hear about ESPN hating UT it reminds me of the Bama crap I have to hear nearly everyday.

If we take care of it on and off the field, it doesn't matter if ESPN hates us or not.

Speaking of Bama - a quick Google search yielded information about:

Taylor Britt (arrested 2003 - disorderly and resisting arrest. Pretty much attacked a police officer)

? Nance (arrested 2004 - disorderly and fighting in a night club - sound familiar)

Ezzie Raulls (arrested 2003 - armed robbery -- oops!)

Santonio Beard (DUI arrest)

Ray Hudson (unknown arrest).

I believe former Bama great Keith McCants forgot to return a car he was test driving recently! Oops again.

There have been a few more - just didn't track em down.

Media here is villifying Fulmer. Amazingly, they are praising Spurrier for being tough on his players

They hate Fulmer something fierce in these parts!

Spurrier deserves everything that he gets. I still think he's in shock because Fulmer fired back at him.

ESPN has not started an investigation into USC since they won the Championship, but they sure did when UT won one. ESPN hasn't went out of their way to get a Heisman ballot box stuffed as they did against Peyton. If anyone thinks Woodson deserved the Heisman more than Peyton you need lessons in football. How come both UGA and South Carolina have had 11 players arrested in 12 months and 4 months respectively and you see nothing on ESPN website or TV about how those coaches have lost control. How many schools have their announcer call the fans of a school trailer trash. The only time ESPN has anything positive to say about UT is during Football season when they want a ratings boost prior to a UT telecast. Does ESPN dislike UT you better believe it but they have to have UT for ratings.

There have been many times that I have watched sportscenter looking for some highlights of Tennessee football games. They will show every team under the sun and just flash our score up for a couple of seconds. Unless we beat someone big or GET BEAT..... there is no coverage.

What kind of ratings boost would ESPN get from constantly bashing UT? I seriously doubt they care THAT much about their markets in north Florida and Alabama.

The reason they're getting us now is that Tennessee realistically has one of the best shots at making a title run in the country. Georgia is expected to lose their division, even finishing third in the SEC East so nobody cares right now. Nobody's gonna get on the Dawg's Bandwagon. You won't hear anything on Spurrier because anything he says will get higher ratings than anything his players do, so that would be a waste of a story.

And as far as USC, so what if some players fail some classes? People won't care because it's not nearly as big a deal as players getting arrested, and Southern California is generally recognized as one helluva tough academic school.

So where does this percieved ESPN bias come from... They prefer to cover the unexpected. That's what always makes the news. Tennessee definitley flew under the radar last season. The defining moment of the 2004 season definitley had to be the win against #3 Georgia on the road, which was unexpected, and you know what? ESPN covered it! Shocking! It was big news! Tennessee got attention! Until we lost to Auburn anyways, that's about the time they started becoming the big story of the SEC. Toss that in with our loss to Notre Dame and close calls against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, and there's no reason we deserved national attention. But, when we challenged Auburn in the SEC Championship, we got our fair share of national attention. "Tennessee Gives Auburn a Scare." What more would you expect?

"Tennessee Almost Defeats National Champions to-be Auburn, and We at ESPN Apologize for Demonizing Tennessee and Phillip Fulmer and we also Retroactively Award a Heisman Trophy to Peyton Manning."

Whatever. ESPN has no agenda against UT. ESPN's agenda is to get ratings. If that means that a school that is propped up to make a national title run suffers some arrests, then so be it. Fulmer, you're in the spotlight. Make the right moves.

like or not ESPN boosted woodson to the winning of the hypesman and folks around here know who the best player in college football was that season so excuse us for harboring hard feelings against them and the yr we won the NC it was always "luck" according to the great minds at ESPN like I said I love ESPN as long as the mute button works

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm just stating mine. :peace2:

ESPN being pro-Woodson isn't necessarily anti-UT. Peyton could have played for UF or Bama or ... The problem he had (unfortunately) is that he was so good so many years that he was the natural choice. Well, that's not very newsworthy. ESPN may have been about $$$ or it may have been the natural tendency we have to pull for the underdog. We (USA) love someone when they are coming up, the struggle etc. etc. But when you hit the top, you become a target somehow. Peyton was a victim of being so good consistently (sounds strange). Him winning the heisman was a no-brainer - as I said, not newsworthy.

My point is that while ESPN hyped up Woodson, that's not necessarily a conspiracy against UT - ESPN is out for ESPN. If it helps them to target UT sometimes, they'll do it. But just as quickly, they'll jump to the next team.

Here's the test. If UT has many down years (goes back to a 7 - 4 also ran), those stories about UT will dry up. Being at the top puts you under scrutiny. The problem we've had is that in addition to being at the top, we've had things (large or small) to investigate or talk about. Perhaps they haven't looked hard enough yet at USC but I bet they are. Unfortunately for us, we had a situation (tutorgate) where it was likely some academic chicanery was going on and we had a very vocal person making the charges (Bentzel-Myers). If that wasn't happending (to some degree) there would have been no story. I'm sure Ohio State fans thought the coverage of the Clarett stuff was over the top and unfair. As stated in an earlier post, some Bama fans listen to everyword of ESPN just waiting for the insults (real or perceived).

4- real. There were plenty of players that year with stats as good as Woodson's and if you want to bring in the argument that he played both sides of the ball, remember a guy who played at Ohio State last year by the name of Gamble? Better than Woodson both ways in my opinion!

I don't know how anyone could conclude that ESPN doesn't have their favorites.

Lets summarize what's happened recently.

Since the end of the regular season SC has had 11 arrests. I believe at least 6 of those were for larceny, larceny for crying out loud. At least 2 have been for illegal drug use. To my knowledge, all of UT's problems involved fist fights.

Now, fast forward to today's ESPN.com headlines.

The Answer Man
STEVE SPURRIER BRINGS WINNING ATTITUDE TO SC
Gamecocks spring game
Spurrier: Nowhere to go but up / with video
TICKER: Arrested development: Gamecocks Charged

Now Tennessee's headlines on today's espn.com

STAND AND DELIVER
In the wake of the off-the-field problems, it's time for Phillip Fulmer to finally take a stand or risk the Vols turning into an OUTLAW program,
Ticker: SEC Insicer: Vols have high hopes

Now, lets see if they have a favorite.

On the same day that SC catches us in arrests, most of which were far more serious than ours, SC has 4 positively glowing headlines plus a video and one arrest headline that draws no conclusions.

UT has a harshly critical headline with a very negative teaser attached and one neutral headline.

Oh, and we both had spring games Saturday and ESPN televised Carolina's and we didn't even get a mention on the headlines.

Anyone who concludes ESPN doesn't play favorites is either:

A] Not paying attention
B] Not much of a Vol fan :(
C] Crippled too high for crutches

It is and was clear that ESPN's ratings were taking a hit because the suspense had gone out of the Heisman race. So, what do they do? They created their own suspense.

It was as obvious as daylight.
