Those highlights seem to indicate he has put on some good weight. I had once compared him very similarly to Tyler Smith, but with his added size, he looks a bit like a slimmer, more athletic Grant Williams. Not quite the banger GW was, but has some similar post moves, a nice spin move in the paint, and a much improved looking shot. Definitely quicker as freshman Grant, as well. This kid was viewed as a 5* player early on for a reason, and he seems to have improved. As BTO opined, playing AAU last summer seems to have hurt his ranking more than anything.
I would agree. Not abandoning my Tyler Smith comparison, at all, but he looks like he may have added 15 lbs, or so, since last season, which still puts him 20 lbs, or more lighter than freshman GW. He just seemed to show a bit more resemblance with the added weight.I’d say he’s much more similar to Tyler Smith than Grant. I didn’t edit it the best and cut the highlights pretty close so you don’t really see full possessions, he brought the ball up and facilitated quite a bit. Didn’t post up all too much. He’s good off the drive, especially going right with a good spin both ways. Good and willing passer.
I think he’s a better perimeter shooter than Tyler Smith, doesn’t have the greatest mechanics but still a decent natural stroke. he’s already a good shooter and this program is usually pretty good at making good shooters great ones.
Don’t know if he has the motor of a Tyler Smith but he is a very good offensive rebounder with a great knack for tip ins and a really quick jump when he wants to.
For his ranking, Im sure not playing AAU didn’t help his ranking. He did play in the NBPA top 100 a pretty major camp and had a good showing.
I think it was a bit tough for Walker playing with a point guard like KD Johnson (going to UGA) who really got the lions share of the shot attempts and dominated the ball quite a bit. But to Walker’s credit, he seemed to be a team first player all season and even if he didn’t get too many shots he would effect the game in other ways, like tip ins or blocks or spotting up for 3s. But he’s still at his best on the ball at the moment and that limited his shot attempts at times playing such fellow ball dominant PG along with several other D1 players.
As I noted earlier, my Tyler Smith comparison was prior to his added weight. With the added size, I can see more of the Tobias Harris comparison you mentioned when we last had this discussion, and I like it much more now than I did then. Like you said, not that level of skill, yet, but very similar body control in the paint, unselfish, and a developing perimeter game.I still feel like Tobias Harris is a good comp, again he’s not yet at that level obviously, but similar game.
I presume, or at least working out and practicing
Ok.
I am not a fan of a player deciding not to play AAU in favor of working out. Imo that increases the chances a player doesn’t have the love for the game needed to bring out the best in them.
Hopefully that isn’t what happened here but it sounds like we don’t know exactly what the circumstances were behind him not playing.
Does anyone know, roughly, the percentage of time he played outside vs. near the basket? As I noted earlier, my Tyler Smith comparison was prior to his added weight. I also agree he's a better shooter than Smith, which has been an area of improvement for him. He wasn't as willing to play outside before this season, finding more success in the mid-range and getting to the paint.
His willingness to defer to a guy like Johnson will probably serve him well in Barnes' system as it looks to be guard/wing-oriented in the near term. But nice to see that Walker can handle the ball and pass effectively, and maybe play that point forward position that Tyler Smith played.
I know you did not just say that lolOk.

Offseason Bruin is already in full form I seeOk.

Do yourself a favor, google “Kobe Bryant aau”Offseason or in season my opinion will always be the same. If a kid chooses not to play AAU in hoops, travel baseball, or even one time I questioned a football recruit for playing volleyball instead of college football my opinion will always be consistent.
That player is more likely than other players to not have the “love for the game” to have the drive to succeed at the SEC level than other kids.
By the way that football recruiting thread had many of the same kind of responses that are here.
Woody Quinn was the name and by the way he never busted a grape for the vols
for the record I don’t know the circumstance of why Walker didn’t play AAU last summer. Hopefully it wasn’t a personal choice.
