NFL Vols: Former Tennessee players on training camp rosters

QB Josh Dobbs (Browns)
RB Alvin Kamara (Saints)
RB John Kelly (Browns)
FB Jakob Johnson (Raiders)
WR Jauan Jennings (49ers)
WR Marquez Callaway (Saints)
WR Josh Malone (Titans)
WR Preston Williams (Dolphins)
DE Darrell Taylor (Seahawks)
DE Derek Barnett (Eagles)
DE Jonathan Kongbo (Broncos)
DT Shy Tuttle (Saints)
DT Kahlil McKenzie (Ravens)
DT Kendal Vickers (Raiders)
LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin (Texans)
DB Cam Sutton (Steelers)
DB Emmanuel Moseley (49ers)
DB Micah Abernathy (Packers)

We almost had a starting 22 in 2016 of all NFL players and somehow won only 9 games. I would like to see how many players from the 2016 Clemson and Alabama teams that played for the national title are still in the NFL right now. I'd be willing to bet our roster was similar in talent to theirs that year.

There's probably never been a college team with this much talent that accomplished so little.
Geezus, I thought this guy was gone for ever!
The man, the myth, the legend, has returned to Volnation!

Even an average coach has that team in the playoffs.

I'll give Butch credit for his player evaluations though. He was an all-time bad coach when in came to game management but he was a hell of an evaluator when it came to talent. He knew how to identify ballers. Too bad he had no idea how to get the best out of them on Saturdays.
I actually think if Dooley and Pruitt were coaching those teams they win the east. Now they couldn't have built the rosters necessary, but I don't recall the same awful play calling.

The 2OT loss at Texas A&M was a crushing defeat, considering how close we came to starting 6-0. But we did have a crazy number of injuries that year. We had 7 players out in the big loss to Bama (the eventual NC) and we had 3 other players knocked out in that game. That helped set the table for the losses to South Carolina and Vandy, which were still inexcusable and what resulted in the disappointing W-L record.

This is mind numbing to me. For years, I subscribed to the thought that Bama always won because they had a pro team playing amateurs.... Obviously, I was WRONG! This makes me sick to my stomach. Having the culture to win regardless and having the coaches there to put the kids in the right places means more than I ever thought.

Beldars play calling was horrendous
Yeah he wasn't great at it, but I just remember being mystified at JG. They couldn't really do much. It was Butch where they tried impossible jet sweeps, bubble screens when a defender was playing press coverage, stupid flood plays on the goal line, blowing double digit leads by running multiple QB draws on third and long. I don't remember that kind of crap with cornbread. Like the Alabama game in 2019. They called plays that gave us a chance but we all know what happened...

I don't know about winning the Heisman, due to anti-UT biases. But I do, I do, I do believe with him in the Heup system, we'd have average 70+ ppg. And no, I'm not exaggerating or throwing out ultra-hyperbole.
I agree, we would have had one of the greatest offenses in NCAA history. It could have been 95 Neb or 05 USC good.

Lyle was the worst gameday coach by a mile imo. Dobba and Company won games in spite of him. The man kicked FGs from the one yard line.

some were not that talented while they were here...or put another way, UNDER DEVELOPED (many on the list) or under utilized (Kamara)...some obviously had great college careers.

We had the talent to compete with anyone. We just didn’t have the right culture in the building. Of course that begins and ends with butch. Getting talent is one thing. Holding those players to a high expectation level is a balancing act as many of those kids are almost celebrities once they show up on campus. The best programs condition the kids to pour their hearts into their preparation and work as hard as they ever have before.
Another huge shortcoming was butch’s constantly playing it safe. I’ll never forget the first year he was here we had things rolling really well against Vanderbilt before halftime. We got the ball back while leading by either 7 or 10 with about two minutes before half near the 50 yard line with a couple of timeouts and we essentially took a knee. I was like what the hell? Vandy was good that year and we had all the momentum. Right then and there (10 games into his career) I knew how Butch Jones’s tenure at Tennessee would end. I’ve never know of a great coach that played afraid. Compare that scenario to last season Heuple was calling the plays against Kentucky. It was a similar scenario and we got the ball deep in our own territory before half but only had like 30 seconds left on the clock. A much lower percentage scenario to score on then what Butch faced. Yet we threw two deep comeback routes on the sideline to Tillman and kicked a long field goal as time expired. We ended up winning that game in regulation by a margin of three points. One coach had balls and the other didn’t.

Was Nathan Peterman on this team or did he already transfer. He started a few games in the NFL.

Just saw Guarantano is playing for the Cardinals. He was on the 2016 team so that makes it 19 players in the NFL currently.

How you forget about Brandon Johnson?! 1st NFL game as a starter 4 rec for 64 yards.

Completely forgot he was part of the 2016 class. Thought he came here in 2017.

Once we add Brandon and Jarrett to the list then that makes it 20 players from the 2016 team in the NFL right now.

Pure madness.

You cannot blame the SC and Vandy losses all on Butch. The talent you go on and on about should have been able to beat them both. If you are gonna blame Butch then you have to give him credit for beating UGA and UF.

I liked posting this before D4H disappeared. This was after the Vols almost lost to Ohio.

I can't believe I trusted these guys to improve. I can't believe I thought Butch Jones was anything but a liability. I can't believe I thought Dobbs could pass the ball.

I'd like to apologize to everyone for everything I said over the summer. This team sucks and this QB is terrible.

Hopefully Florida blasts them next week and Butch Jones is fired on the spot.
