'20 VA C Dylan Cardwell

I've been in the camp that wanted Cardwell because I think he'll be a starter-level SEC big man by the end of his career, but this quote from you is the first time I've seen a counterpoint to taking a grad-transfer over a 4-year player this season stated well. I'm still on the "wish we had gone after him" train but I finally see the other side clearer. Thank you for that.
Then I must be awful at verbalizing my point because that’s what I’ve been saying for awhile now...also the fact that as for next year alone I think Anosike is ready to contribute much more than Cardwell.

No problem, glad it helped.

To be fair, I'm not certain that Tennessee might not have taken Cardwell if they had another open scholarship. I'm not sure they soured on him to the point of deciding he wasn't a take. I just think they decided that Anosike was a sure-fire contributor next season where DC might not have been. Maybe they think next season is their window to make the push and needed some immediate help in the rebounding department, which EJA immediately fills.

Cardwell missing an entire season, on top of not being a sure thing to begin with, was perhaps the tipping point. That, and perhaps the staff feels better about Banchero and/or Bediako than the "experts" believe they should.

In any case, I think this was definitely a short-term decision rather than one for the long term. If Cardwell immediately starts out at AU with his hair on fire and has a great 3-4 year career, we look back on it and say, oh well, we missed that one. Conversely, if he struggles to get much action next year, and EJA plays a significant role in an NCAAT run, then the one-year trade-off is possibly worth it.

I wanted Cardwell but he’s no where near a make or break type of talent.

He’ll need a lot of development before he makes an SEC starting roster.

We will compare Cardwell’s number verse Anosike next year, thread saved.
no that’s not the point at all

my opinion is based off the time it takes for bigs to really be productive for Barnes. It would have taken Cardwell more than one year to be a good player just as it’s likely it takes the 2021Big we get to replace Anosike

The impact of Anoslke has to be greater than the growing pains of losing Pons, Fulkerson and Anosike all in one year. That’s the measuring stick for this

Agree to an extent, but Keon Johnson missed pretty much his whole senior year and would’ve been pretty highly sought after had he been available this spring.
That is true, and I agree there, but a lot of Keon’s rise came from the USA camp performances he had.

GW put up 13&6 as a frosh, Fulky 5&5...not sure we see Cardwell match either of those as a freshman. I feel much more confident in junior ORN, sophomore Walker or Plavsic, or 2021 freshman putting up the numbers Cardwell does.

You keep ignoring my point

It’s what Cardwell would do in 2021-2022 his soph season that is key

And I will take my chances that junior ORN and Plavsic, sophomore Walker, freshman in 2021 will at the very least match his numbers.

That is going to be very hard when those guys don’t get many minutes at all. A lot of pressure on walker to get it done if that’s the group we are feeling good about with little to no developmental minutes this season

He wasn’t really needed for the upcoming season. Moreso for ‘21-‘22 in the hopes that between he and Uros/ORN that one of them could be an sec-caliber starter

Maybe we’re confident in landing one of Banchero or Jabari Smith and feel like Uros or ORN have good potential

We’ve already talked that someone of that group is likely to get some minutes...and you are disregarding the 2021 class, GW put up pretty good numbers his freshman year, much better than I anticipate Cardwell will his sophomore year.

That seems very likely the staffs mindset, coupled with the fact they probably felt like they a void they needed to fill this upcoming season and saw Anosike as that solution.

There in lies the problem with your thinking. You are assuming we sign the next grant Williams in 2021. I find that to be very unlikely and think we likely will sign the next Fulky or Pons in 21 and that is my point

So you think the 2020 class was a fluke?

I don't know about that, Bru. Everybody UT is in on right now, are at least top 50. In fact, I think UTs top 3 are all 5 stars and rated in the top 15. Banchero and Smith are top 5 and I think Chandler is #15.

There is a big difference between signing a top ranked player and that player being grant williams the 2 time SEC player of the year.

I have no doubt we will sign a highly ranked big in 2021 but I don’t think they will be ready to be winning elite SEC player in year 1

As I said in my last post I think we will get a highly rated guy but I also think BTO will spend a lot of time that first year posting the stats other similarly ranked players to convince the impatient ones that that player isn’t a bust. Same thing he did much of the year posting stats showing that JJJ was doing better than most highly ranked players

So your belief is that sophomore Dylan Cardwell is going to be more talented and well-adjusted than any freshman big man we sign and add for the 2021-22 season? Is that the angle, here?

No. My angle is that not having the grad Transfer would more PT for walker, Uros, Olivier, and Cardwell which in turn sets us up for at least 2 of those ready to take over for Pons and Fulky.

I think we enter the next year with barely one big ready to contribute as it stands now

EXACTLY...'20-'21 will be full of talented scorers if star ratings mean anything. Wouldn't ask much of Cardwell his freshman year. I personally believe Cardwell will be a better player than ORN/Uros in 2 years.

So Cardwell is SEC POY in Year 2?

Lol

Pons and Fulkerson not likely are either in 2020-2021 but we need similar production to replace them. I just don’t think a true freshmen is going to do that but maybe just maybe Barnes does recruit the next Grant Williams in the 2021 class but I don’t see that as likely
