2005 UT vs Bama?

I was born in 92 and didn't start watching football until 2007. As I was looking back through the history of this series, 2005 caught my eye.... The final score was Bama (6) to UT (3)... SIX TO THREE!?

My question is, people that experienced this boring loss how terrible was it having to sit and watch that game? 0-0 at halftime and then only 3 FG combined were scored. We score on average 10 points a game alone in the 1st quarter now.
I'll never forget this game for multiple reasons.

1. This was the last game I ever attempted to get tickets outside the stadium before the game. Tickets were overpriced and we got tickets late, so much so that it was half-time by the time we got to our seats.
2. Because we were so late in getting our tickets, the street outside the stadium was nearly empty at one point. I looked toward the south end of the street and saw one Pat Summitt walking in the distance. I yelled her name and she turned to wave. Getting to "interact" with such a legend made being late worth it.

Foster caught a pass and then fumbled out of the back of the endzone
Nope . . . People get that wrong all the time - but for a very good reason. Foster fumbled through the end zone against South Carolina. Corey Anderson did it against Alabama. It's a play you see happen once every 5 years and we managed to do it twice in 2 weeks.

I remember ESPN had us as a dark horse NC contender that year. What a failure of a season.

I remember watching that one and the almost comeback against ND.

I remember some of my soccer teammates either skipping a tournament or thinking about skipping because of that ND game. Can't remember if you were one of them at that point. :)

Remember ESPN televised some of our pre-season practices? I remember thinking our practice looked very lackadaisical but not worrying about it. I should have been worried. We barely beat freakin' UAB in our opener. Winning at LSU was the only positive moment of that whole season.

I myself blame Foster for four Tennessee losses, but not this one. It was Cory Anderson, an underrated for the Vols who never was recognized for his abilities.

I don't think so then since it was hs but I did run across some other team pics not long ago. My boys wanted to see me at their age

I think it happened in the 2013 Georgia game too.

2005 was such a horrible year as a Vol fan.

Preseason #1? Yep
Failed to make a Bowl? Yep
Barely beat Memphis? Yep
First loss to Vandy in forever? Yep
Fulmer first losing season? Yep

Bad memories, man. Thanks for re-opening the wound.
At least we had the LSU game that year. I remember being a little worried that we weren’t as good as advertised in the opening game against UAB; I remember it being incredibly hot that game too.

I remember starting 2005 with enormous expectations and we came out and barely beat UAB in game 1, IIRC

Yep . . . the Pig Howard fumble. That's the one where my son called to trash talk me as I left the stadium and I infamously told him to hang up, go to his room and figure out how he was going to pay for college.

Lol looking at the 2005 schedule we played 5 top 10 teams--4 of those games on the road.

In hindsight, while disappointing, that's a brutal schedule. Even for preseason #3.

There was too much talent on that roster to go 5-6. Look at the guys that got drafted in the NFL from that squad. A mediocre offense combined with that defense goes 8-4.

You're right--not excusing the South Carolina and Vandy losses. But the 5 against top 10s is just not an ideal spot. 8-4 or even 7-5 would have still sucked, but still been somewhat understandable.

He dropped a for sure touchdown against LSU. Luckily we came back from three touchdowns down to win.

Tennessee was the better team that day and was about to take control with the late TD. Anderson fumbled (another example of getting ball in critical situatiuon to players not accustomed handling the ball) and Bama got the touchback. Brody Croyle hit a deep sideline pass to get bama in FG range and they hit it on the last play or close to the last play.

Rick Clausen finished the 2004 bowl game strong and he should have been the starter in 2005. Ainge could have redshirted that season, and been a senior in 08..

Respectfully disagree. Rick Clausen was not good and wouldn't have started for any other SEC power. Ainge showed he was the better over both of their careers.

The game was awful and became the second of 4 straight losses. By the time the Vandy game came around I was so disappointed I didn't attend (but watched it from my apartment in the Fort). After the loss to Vandy I walked down to snap photos of fans leaving the stadium for a Photo Journalism class project... and everyone was stunned at what they had witnessed. October 2005 was the beginning of the end for Coach Fulmer (and a preview of what was to come for most of 2008 to 2020).
