[Warning: this is almost totally irrelevant to this thread]

I (briefly) met Patrick McEnroe at the Legg-Mason (I just saw him on the grounds; briefly shot the breeze with him; handshake; and then he had someplace to be).

Okay, so you know how some people are taller than you would expect or shorter than you would expect? Well, Patrick McEnroe is the *exact* height I expected him to be. An even six foot. No taller; no shorter.

Yes, this was random.

[Back on topic]

Mardy Fish dominated in his second round match. 7-5, 6-0, 6-2.

I'm telling y'all, he's playing the best he's ever played.

Federer with straight sets win today. I had to listen to the first set on XM channel 236, which is nothing more than the audio from the ESPN broadcast. Fully aware that it was the tv broadcast and not made for radio, but it was pointless to listen. If you think the tv commentary is bad just try to listen to it on the radio.

Federer was up 3-0 before I knew that the match was out of the first game.

I watched the second and third sets (or what was shown on ESPN2) on tv. Fed is playing pretty solidly, but there is now that bit of vulnerability always lurking in the background for RF. It is really inexcusable for him to be up 5-0 in the first set and let a player of Beck's caliber back into the match.

That has been his biggest problem over the course of the past 2 seasons. He cannot step on the throat of his opponent and finish him off when he has his opp on the ropes. He lets them get up and get back into the feel of the match. Makes things very hard on himself.

The positives are he is striking the ball well and seems to be very confident.

Fed is playing well. Fed will be in the finals. Whether he wins depends on who he plays.

Here is my stab at the final 8:
Nadal vs. Nalbandian
Fish vs. Gasquet
Murray vs. Isner
Fed vs. Soderling

And the final 4:
Nadal vs. Murray
Fed vs. Fish

Fed will destroy Fish, but Nadal/Murray will be an epic battle. If Nadal wins, he'll beat Fed in the final. If Murray wins, Fed will win it all.

One thing I can guarantee is that a strong percentage of my picks will not pan out. So please, for the love of all things sacred, do not go to your bookie armed with these picks.*

*Exception: I'm about 98.7% sure Fed makes the final.

Nadal has no business making the final of this U.S. Open. If someone from his side of the draw can't take him out, it says more about the competition than it does about Nadal.

Don't get me wrong, Nadal is a great enough player to grind his way through everyone and win the whole thing. It wouldn't shock me if that happened. But on this surface he is ripe for the picking. Somebody with a pair will need to step up and take it to him. Murray is a pretty good bet on that side of the draw.

I see Federer with a different attitude now days. He is aggressive and prepared to steam roll people. I truly believe he wants to face Nadal in the final. If that matchup happens, I think it will be Roger's 17th Grand Slam title by either: (a) a 4 set ho-hummer, or (b) a 5 setter of epic proportions. Either way Fed is determined NOT to let Nadal beat him on this surface.

That is different than the recent past where Roger has been content to play defense against Nadal and trade shots with him. If it happens in NY, Fed will come loaded for bear.

Of all the weird families in professional tennis history, the Djokovic family might just take the cake.

This is an exceptionally bold statement. Nadal is the #1 player in the world...and not just by a little bit.

Yes, it is. Nadal is the # 1 player in the world but he isn't close to being # 1 player in the world on hard courts. So far it has been his kryptonite. He is talented enough to overcome it and win the thing on sheer guts alone. Still, based on his problems with slippery fast hard courts, he shouldn't be around on the final Sunday of the US Open.

Hands down #1 player outside of US hardcourts (even on grass) right now.

Nadal's serve has improved. It doesn't take much to take the top player in the world and like him to win the open. He should make it pretty deep, if not win the thing.

Tips and Monfils in the 4th set. They are showing Sharapova put a double bagel on a no name. Its absolutely killing me...

If Maria, Venus or Serena were playing badminton with a 5 year old it would be shown before a quality match with two foreign players. Sad, really.

BTW, love the nick :)

Nevermind what I said about Nadal yesterday. Murray goes down today and there is no credible challenge left on Nadal's half of the draw. He will make it to the final with relative ease.

On the other hand, it is looking more and more like a Fed/Soderling QF matchup that should be epic. Winner of that QF will meet Nadal on Sunday afternoon in the final.

I agree with this. The Soderling/Fed match should be great. I wish I was still there to see it. Yes that was a transition.

I went to the Open for two days. I had to go. Fed is no spring chicken and you never know when Nadal's knees are going to snap in half. I figured it was as good a time to go as any. Some observations:

-Fed and Nadal are on a different level than everybody else. There are other guys, like Djokovic, who can the same type of shots that Fed and Nadal can hit. But it's different. Fed/Nadal play with a purpose. That's the best way I can articulate it.

-As you all can probably gather from my posts I am a fan of Nadal, but I did leave with a healthy respect for Fed. I get sick of hearing about the "grace" and "artistry" of Federer's game, but when I saw him live it kinda made sense. He is impressive to watch because he rarely appears to be exerting himself. What appears to be a lazy forehand will result in pure smoke coming at a ridiculous angle. Even his serve looks a little bit like he's just warming up.
Also, Fed doesn't appear to be overwhelmingly fast, but then just try to get him out of position. See how it works out for you. Heck, even try to get him off balance.

-Both Fed and Nadal favor their forehand, but I don't see why Nadal does this. His backhand is just as good as his forehand. Fed, on the other hand, is right to favor his forehand. His forehand is obscene. His backhand is very good, but isn't the same kind of weapon.

-James Blake can't hit a backhand to save himself. It's bad.

-Isner is going to have a hard time ever becoming truly elite with his height. He is too tall. It adversely affects the way he moves. That said, he has a lot of moxie with his serve. When the crowd gets into it, he doesn't hesitate to go for broke on his second serve. And he generally gets it in.

-Back on the Fed/Nadal thing, the best word to describe Fed's game is "fluid". The best word to describe Nadal's game is "systematic". Nadal is the most OCD tennis player i've ever seen. Everything is according to a process. He never steps on lines. He has the water bottle thing going on, which I don't even fully understand. And of course he bounces the ball incessantly before he serves. The reason his systematic approach isn't figured out and exploited is simply because he does everything so well. He really has no flaws in his game. The biggest critique I have with his game is that he doesn't come into the net nearly enough. There are 3 or 4 times during a point where you can see that he could easily come into the net and put the point away, but he just doesn't. I'm not sure if this is because he is just so accustomed to playing from the base line, or if he is actively trying to wear out his opponent a la Andre Agassi.

-Andy Murray is such a huge vagina.

That's all I got for now.

Fantastic that you got to go to the Open.

Where did you sit? I've always wondered what the view was like from the top of Arthur Ashe (as I figured if I ever went that's where I'd be sitting).

Can't believe Murray went out. Before the tourney, I wouldn't have been surprised if he won the thing.

Crazy thing about Federer's shots are the sound they make when you are close enough to hear them. I've played tennis for 20 years and have never made my ball whizz off my racquet. Federer's ball audibly whizzing through the air. He has every shot in the book, every spin, every angle. Effortless really.

Nadal is autistic. He is like the Rain Man of tennis. Nothing distracts his focus on the court. I am surprised more players (other than Soderling) haven't tried to mentally mess with him on court. Seriously, I think it would throw him off if you moved his water bottles "accidentally" during a changeover.

Good report. We'll see if Nadal and Federer survive to square off Sunday. If so, that Wimbledon 08 final may have been just a warm up for Epicness. I hope it happens.

My tickets were in the upper deck of Ashe..about midway (I got tickets last minute online and would have had to pay an arm and a leg for good good seats). I did sneak down to the 200s for Fed, Nadal, and the very end of the Sharapova beatdown on Capra (sneaking down to the 200s from the 300s was easy). And then I snuck way down to essentially courtside for the Djokovic match (I had to sneak down to this bar in Ashe stadium on Saturday night during the break because I didn't have evening session tickets and I wouldn't have been able to get back in had I left. This worked out quite well as it put me past the security people guarding the lower level and in great position to sneak down even lower to the lower deck. So I snuck down to the lower deck. Yes, I'm an adult acting like a child. And, yes, I had a lady with me. Apologize, I will not.).

I caught the Murray match at Louis Armstrong, which is first come, first served. The Armstrong/Grandstand courts are cool -- Legal seat stealing -- I like the atmosphere better than Ashe (But I understand that they have to make money).

Fed's footwork looks like ballet. Always has. The guy floats around the court. I believe it's the key to his game. He's almost always in perfect position.

You're right about his footwork. If you'll notice when Federer starts to shank forehands, his footwork is lacking. He gets his feet out of position and then lunges into the ball trying to help it over. Shanks a plenty.

By and large he has gotten that out of his system over the course of the summer.

If he can keep it together mentally for two more matches, I feel strongly that he can win the Open no matter the opponent. Djokovic and then maybe Nadal will certainly have something to say about that starting Saturday.

Totally agree on the footwork point -- he's always on balance.

I thought Soderling might at least push it to 4. I didn't get to see the match, but it seems like Fed worked him over pretty good.

Verdasco could get a set off Nadal tonight, but I think smart money is on straight sets for Nadal.

Did y'all see where Hingis/A. Kournikova are playing Wilander/Pat Cash in an exhibition doubles match tonight right before the Nadal match. How random is that? Don't get me wrong, the more Anna Kournikova, the better. But Pat Cash? What...was Yannick Noah not available?

Nice job by Kim Clijsters in her comeback. Venus played well, but Clijsters (for a mother) will put her foot on ur throat and not let up if she gets a chance. Now, back to the men..
