Typical Rivals and ESPN disparity.

I'll bite. What exactly does rivals say about his outside shooting?

What little video I saw, his shot looked MUCH worse than McRae's did in high school. (In fact, so far he sounds like McRae.)

Porter, on the other hand, I could get fired up about.

ESPN added Porter to the list (of players considering Tennessee) when Martin was hired. I checked who was considering Missouri State. Porter was and still is on the list. Then checked the UT list and found him there too. Wasn't sure if that was a presumption on ESPN's part, but he and the other forward McLemore can play.

I know. And if I was Bruce Pearl, I wouldn't have wanted to face Mizzou State later in the season after only besting them by 4 early on. One team improved and the other fell off a cliff.
I thought the same thing.

Found this on hawgsports

6. Otto Porter
School: Sikeston (Mo.) Scott County Central
The Buzz: The skilled 6-foot-8 forward is a sure bet to make a huge climb up the rankings from his current spot of 97 when things get adjusted. Over the weekend he won his third straight state title and became the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Missouri Final Four. At the moment, he figures to be a very heavy lean to Missouri but Georgetown has been putting in work and he's recently added Kansas to his final list of schools.

8. Josh Richardson
School: Edmond (Okla.) Sante Fe
The Buzz: A 6-foot-5 wing, the nation's 121st-ranked senior, is a versatile performer who can handle the ball and is a terror in transition. He visited Missouri State officially last week. He's also officially visited Georgia Tech but his status with Tech is iffy after Paul Hewitt's firing. TCU is also expected to get a visit while Ole Miss, UCLA, Oklahoma State and others have placed recent feelers.

In a 2/15 article a subscriber asked who was likely to make the biggest jump in the 150:

Meyer: I've written before about Nick Johnson's impressive play this season and the likelihood of him moving up in the rankings. The other prospect in the rankings who will likely make a big jump is Otto Porter. He is 6 feet 8, highly skilled and has a great feel for the game. We didn't see him over the spring and summer, so we were quite conservative in our ranking of him.

Bossi: For me, I think I have to go with Otto Porter, the near 6-foot-9 forward from Sikeston (Mo.) Scott County Central. He's currently a four-star and ranked No. 97 nationally, but there's a good chance that he could make a push for a ranking in five-star thanks to his unique blend of size, skill and fluid athleticism.

That being said, I don't really think we're in on Porter. He seems to be deciding between Missouri and Georgetown and has hinted that distance will be a big factor so I'm thinking Mizz...

Glad Buzz didn't think that when he offered Lofton who was likely Valpo bound. Pearl also brought Childress, a UWM signee who had some nice moments at UT

Lofton could shoot like crazy when he showed up on campus. Richardson (as a shooter) clearly needs work.

Really??? When? He spent his senior year on the bench...
pearl didn't even let him play on senior day, did he?

"Struggled to completely bounce back from a dislocated kneecap suffered during a pickup game on June 11 and saw action in only four games during his final season ... Underwent knee surgery on June 17 and was unable to take part in live practice work until the week before Christmas" utsports.com (concerning his senior year)

I thought he showed a lot of skills: shot well his sophomore year, passed well, decent defense, rebounded pretty well, scrapped -- played alot like Bradshaw, but could've been more productive than him given more significant playing time.

Rivals lists his shooting as outstanding while ESPN said it needs major work. It just demonstrates how little you can actually read into what these recruiting services say. Not just in basketball, but football as well. If a coach wants a player then that should tell you way more than what a recruiting service thinks. That's just my opinion.

He is a great player with a knack for the ball. I've watched him play several times. He does need to put on a little bulk but if he is like his Dad & cousins it wont be a problem. His 1st cousin(Corey Porter) who was the team captain of the 2011 MO Class 4 state Champion(Sikeston,MO) can dunk a basketball @ 6'1". No big deal there except he weighs over 300 lbs. He was also an Allstate defensive lineman.

I thought Rivals just said "shooting: excellent". ESPN says that too, it just says he has no range. In other words, accurate within his range, which isn't very far. The video clip seems to support that description.

You're probably right. Its so hard to tell with some of these service. I do think he is a good player with good potential. Would definitely be a nice prospect given that he seems to be a very hard worker.

Did you catch his contributions before his senior year? He wasn't a world beater but he was contributor.

If we can get otto porter we need to take him, he looks very good on youtube. But We need to save room for next year. We are in on some very good big men for 2012. We need to make sure we have room to sign them. May not have 13 schollies to play with because of NCAA Penalites.
Need to make sure we have room for 4 2012 prospects
