2012 SF Derek Reese - New TN Commit

Uhhhh....I don't see the resemblance at all. More like Jujuan Smith to me.

Serious?

Smith was purely a 3 point shooter

Prince played hard nosed D and had no shooting outside shooting touch at all. He was more explosive than JR but they play similar D.

Smith was not purely a 3 point shooter. lol

Exactly, prince had NO shooting touch outside 10 feet at all. If you remember defense would literally sag off him to about the free throw line, Richardson atleast poses the threat of a 3 or midrange game.

Great. I can't relax now that it appears Richardson is on the verge of going pro.

Who said that? I said he's well-rounded. Doesn't have many glaring weaknesses, other than being an average free-throw shooter and long-range shooter. I said he has an NBA skill-set. Not nearly at the level needed to play in the NBA, just similar to what you'd look for in a pro as far as being a complete player.

Jujuan wasn't called the pest because he planned to go into the exterminating business. He was an excellent defender similar to JR. Had a good 3 point shot. And could slash to the basket.

JP never shined until the second half of his Senior year. Was classified as a bit lazy. Had a terrible 3 point shot. Never crashed the boards on D. Instead, he was always trying to get his patented run out to salute the fans for the ESPN highlight dunk. Reminds me of absolutely nothing of JR.

"Wouldn't look for Derek Reese's minutes to do anything but increase going forward based off Martins comments this afternoon."

Ok, I've gotta say something about it. I still see no reason to be super excited about Reese. He played 23 minutes, shot 25%, and 50% from the stripe. People would crucify any of our other players if they did that. I will be SUPER SUPER pumped if I'm wrong, but I see no reason to believe he'll be much more effective than he was against Xavier.

I don't want to sound mean, but your assessment of JS is just bad. Jajuan Smith was probably the best athlete and defender on his teams. He could handle the ball, drive to the rim, had tremendous leaping ability, and could shoot the lights out (though he was streaky). Calling him, "purely a 3-point shooter" is akin to calling Calvin Johnson purely a possession receiver.

The Richardson-Prince comparison isn't as awful as some think, but JP was probably a slightly better athlete and passer, but a worse shooter. I can't verbally dictate how bad his offense was outside of 2'. Richardson is as good a defender, as good a ball-handler, but has a much better mid-range game and perimeter shot, despite only shooting 21% from three. Both are good rebounders (JP-offensive, JR-defensive). Richardson makes better decisions with the ball IMO. Some will disagree with that.

He gives us someone that can step out and hit the 3 at the 4 position. If he can continue to do this then teams will have to defend him out there and that should create better spacing and prevent some of the double teams on Stokes. His defense was better than I expected. I thought his shooting form was horrible, but he did hit 2 3's and he is suppose to be a good shooter, so I guess it works for him.

Agreed on the shooting form.

Again, he went 2-8 and 2-6 from 3. We already have one McBee....

I just think it's crazy that people are talking about him as if he filled the entire void left by Maymon. Let's see what he does first...

He was 2-6 from the 3. McBee was 1-7, so in the only data point that we have so far, he is better than twice as good as McBee.

Also, expectations. Nobody expected anything from him this year. THen he comes out in a big game, hits a couple three's, plays good D, and gives UT a little more depth.

Yeah, he went 2-8...but it's his first college game.

That was an improvement over what the other players shot except for dunks. He sparked a rally where Tennessee went from a 10 deficit to a 6 point lead. It was his first game so why not be a little excited. We won and that was the most important outcome of the game.

I'm not saying we don't need him, or that he's terrible - I'm just saying I don't share the excitement, and I think some are setting some unrealistic expectations up for him.

I'm mildly surprised myself at the overly warm reception his performance earned. I think fans are so starved for an outside shooting threat, that even the slimmest margin of hope brings excitement, and they probably had low to zero expectations for him too. He certainly exceeded mine in his debut by hitting the 2 big three's, and their timing was as big as anything, as they came at crucial points.

I'm tempering my excitement. I want to see him do it again and preferably at a more efficient pace, but I don't blame fans for liking their new toy. At least he wasn't 0-8 with 4 TOs.

The only silly comment I've seen was someone saying he would be all-SEC before he left. That's goofy. He has done nothing to warrant that kind of talk yet.
