Tennessee makes an appearance as an "also ran" along with Memphis, Baylor and others, according to a recent ESPN Insider article.

1. Kentucky
2. Michigan State
3. Kansas
4. Arizona
5. Michigan
6. Duke
7. Okie State
8. Louisville
9. Florida
10. North Carolina

(Author gives honorable mentions, which seem to be in order of talent as well)
11. Baylor
12. Memphis
13. Syracuse
14. Indiana
15. UCLA
16. Colorado
17. St. John's
18. Washington
19. Tennessee

Is Memphis so low because of Pastner's inability to progress guys into the league? And that's an honest question, not instigating...

Memphis has more 5* than just about every team in that top 10, yet isn't in the top 10, why is that?

Not all recruiting projections are correct, but as I tally them up, I see that Memphis has 2 5 stars. Doesn't seem like all that many.

EDIT: possibly 3, depending on where you look. King and Nichols respectively are listed of the tail end of the 5 stars on scout/rivals.

I honestly believe Stokes' and McRae's stock will increase after this season despite how heavy this next draft is supposed to be.

Yea it depends on what service you use. I wasn't referring solely to this team, but his track records with past 5*. Kendrick amounted to nothing, Thomas just went undrafted, and Barton made a quick appearance in the NBA last year. Jackson wasn't given a 1st round grade this past year, so not sure where he'll go next year.

Right now the best development job Pastner can boast is DJ Stephens who went undrafted and likely won't make a roster.

He has had 5 and 4 stars out the wazoo, but hasn't really developed any of them into the players they were expected to be.

Kendrick never saw the floor as a Tiger, and was in Memphis for only a few months. He also washed out of Ole Miss, and we can see how he shakes out at UNLV this season.

Adonis is a sad story, I would put him in the same boat as Scotty Hopson. Some top 10 recruits are just over hyped.

Will Barton is doing really well in the NBA.

As for players currently on his roster, I guess we'll have to see after this season. Joe jackson looks like he could be the best PG in the nation this coming season. Geron Johnson had NBA scouts drooling at the KD skills camp, and was one of (if not THE) top performers there. Crawford and Dixon could both be first rounders. Shaq Goodwin is only a sophomore.

Let's be honest, there's a whole lot of IF'S and COULDS in that post.

Simply going off past history, Pastner hasn't done a very good job developing highly talented guys, at least not to a NBA level (which is their goal). Which is what my original question was about, it seemed odd that while on paper Memphis has one of the most talented team in the country, the experts don't think Pastner's recruits will live up to it.

I'm not sure I get what you're saying, you keep saying that "on paper" Memphis has one of the most talented teams in the country.

They do, according to this article.

Will Barton is doing amazing in the NBA right now, as was Elliot Williams pre-injury. Suddenly because Adonis Thomas doesn't get drafted, Pastner isn't developing talent?

Will Barton is "doing amazing in the NBA" right now? 12 mpg and 4 ppg for a team that finished the season on a 13-game losing streak is amazing?

Elliot Williams...not much better, injury aside.

Bustin chops. Hes doing alright. Luckily for him the bar hasnt been set very high for Pastner's guys.

There's a lot of NBA guys doing worse for themselves than Barton is.

Considering Pastner has only "graduated" (left school with or without degree, not transfers to another school) about 6 or so guys that he's brought into the program himself:

Will Coleman
Elliot Williams
Adonis Thomas
D.J. Stephens
Will Barton
Stan Simpson

And two are currently on NBA contracts, while two others are working out for NBA summer league teams, Pastner isn't doing all that bad.

EDIT: 7 players; forgot Ferro Hall.

How many years did Simpson play under Pastner? Just noticed he was a 3 star by rivals coming out of high school.
