With the recent loss of Jason Carr, what does our defensive line for the 2014 season look like? I actually think it looks very promising, and will suprise a lot of people that think we have no depth at DT/DE.

DE - Vereen, Maggitt, Lewis, Vickers, Henderson, Miller, Hendrix

DT - Saulsberry, O. Williams, O'brien, J. Williams, Mosley, Barnett, Mixon, Sawyers

Names left off: Carson (not productive) and Folger (?).

With the possibility that incoming freshman Jashon Robertson could contribute as a DT.

I agree that there are a lot of new faces, but I also think they can compete physically. CBJ has already sent a statement that he will not tolerate DL not willing to give it thier all.

Plenty of talented players, but very short on experience.

I think Mosley will RS and Robertson will be OL, and will RS as well. You forgot Sawyers, who I think will be in the 2 deep. As well as Jakob Johnson. I think he will make an impact at DE.

Just added Sawyers. I think they will try Jakob Johnson at LB first, but I agree that he would be disruptive as a DE.

I'm glad were finally talking about the DL as it has been totally ignored in all the other threads! .................................................. Mild Sarcasm alert!

imo how do you redshirt a 6-5 358 lb lineman did someone not recruit right. that is to big of a body not to have on the field at sometime

Possibly Weatherd at DE too.

Sawyers might be in the rotation early too.

With the talent of the new recruits, it is hard to determine just yet who will make the transition from LB to DE. But I am glad that we are finally going to have some speed coming off the corners.

The future looks BRIGHT, but the present looks dim mighty young and that wont get it in this league, the OL is the same way get threw this year and then we can play with anybody in the next coming years, we got to hang in there with this team and don't get down and out and coach pull a top 10 to 15 recruiting class then we will be on our way back to the top where we belong.

What was wrong with Carr anyway I remember when he was coming in he was helping us to pull recruits here and we all thought he would come in and play, what happen.

I read somewhere that he is a good player, but that the weight that he currently is at is not the "good" kind of weight right now, once in the strength and conditioning program he will add a lot of muscle and lose some of the fat.

I also assume you were talking about Mosley.

Big is no good if he is not in good shape. Look at McCullers last year. He was big and was more of a liability than anything else. I think we have enough talented bodies that we can afford to redshirt Mosley. I would rather him RS and be a beast for the next 3 years than to play this year and lose confidence as well as a year of eligibility.

By my count, we have 15 DL. The coaches will rotate them to keep them fresh. I say let Mosley get stronger and get rid of the bad weight.

DT Depth has finally really caught to us.. Scary

And yet half of VN thinks we will win 8 or more games. Defensive depth will kill us, especially late in games and late in the year. And when we play good teams close for a half only to give up a bunch of points on the second half, alot of wizards on here will blame Butch and accuse him of not being able to close out games, getting out-schemed, and not being able to make 2nd half adjustments, when in reality we just don't have the defensive horses to compete behind our 1st team D.

To put it short, VN is in no shortage of idiots.

Take Brown off of there.

On Malik Brown...

As we noted in the war room a couple of weeks ago, he has broken his wrist three times and hasn't been able to get healthy. I think there's a real chance that he takes a medical and gives up football.

I agree.

So how does our fast paced O effect this situation? Seems we would want to possess the ball longer to relieve the pressure on this group. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The only way to combat a lack of depth defensively is to do 1 or 2 things, preferably both. First, like you said, keep your defense off the field as much as possible by running the ball really well on offense, sustaining long drives, and scoring when you're in the red zone. The second way is to create turnovers on D through creative scheming and be really really good on first and second down thus creating alot of 3rd and longs which more times than not will get your D off the field.
