You think UT or Bama would add a Ore, texas or someone like that if the conference went to a 9 game schedule? I think we would see 3 weak ooc games.. jmo
Very well explained...:hi:Alabama still would because their coach's and AD's M.O. is still playing those type of games that get them national attention.
And Tennessee still would because the school has to be seen in and across a variety of states (/ nationally) for recruiting purposes; the school usually has had to recruit nationally to make up for the lack of the amount of in-state talent that usually comes from the state (why we schedule so many home and homes with teams like Cal, UCLA, Nebraska, Oregon, Uconn, attempted with OSU, etc).
Those are two schools that still would.
The fall off comes with teams like say the Mississippi States, Ole Miss, Vanderbilts, etc - the teams that had traditionally struggled to reach 6 wins. They definitely wouldn't attempt anything more than 3 cupcakes OOC.
As expected, the SEC will remain at eight conference games, at least for a few more years. The format is still 6-11 six divisional games, one permanent cross-divisional rival and one rotating divisional rival. Currently, Arkansas is paired with South Carolina and Missouri with Texas A&M as permanent rivals. That will change in 2014 when Arkansas will start to see Missouri on an annual basis and the Aggies and the Gamecocks will become yearly rivals.
To nobody's surprise, the SEC has decided to stick with eight conference games for 2014 and 2015, but the presidents and chancellors will then review future scheduling beginning in 2016.
The translation: By 2016, the SEC will be playing nine conference games.
That was the vibe all week at the SEC spring meetings in talking with coaches and athletic directors, and it's clear that SEC commissioner Mike Slive wants to see schools upgrade their schedules. Slive was careful not to come out and say it, but most in and around the league agree that he's in favor of going to nine conference games.
And, typically, what Slive wants, he gets.
He was on the record this week as saying that he's communicated very clearly to SEC schools that he wants to see them schedule more attractive nonconference games. Down the road, what you're probably going to see is SEC schools playing nine conference games and then one marquee game out of conference.
Or as Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said, "Ten good games."
But in the short term, what's it all mean in terms of who will play whom?
The format will remain 6-1-1. Schools will play everybody in their division, one permanent cross-divisional opponent and one rotating cross-divisional opponent.
A few of the permanent opponents will change. For example, South Carolina and Texas A&M will be paired up, while Arkansas and Missouri will be paired up. In the past, Arkansas and South Carolina were permanent cross-divisional foes.
At least through 2015, LSU and Florida will continue to play every year as permanent cross-divisional foes. LSU has been pushing to do away with permanent cross-divisional opponents and wants to see everybody play two rotating opponents from the other division. LSU coach Les Miles argues that doing it that way makes the schedule more balanced for everybody in the league.
To his point, in their last 10 meetings, both Florida and LSU were ranked in the top 25 of the coaches' poll nine times.
Slive said the 2014 schedule would be released in a matter of weeks.
The league had already approved a rotation based on a 6-1-1 format through 2026. As part of that rotation, Alabama is scheduled to face Georgia in 2014 and Florida in 2015.
Also, the Alabama versus Tennessee and Auburn versus Georgia rivalries will continue to be played on a yearly basis, at least until the league reassesses its scheduling beginning in 2016.
I didn't know they had actually made a decision on 2014 yet. I also noticed that 2015 does have 4 ooc games. But one of those could easily be bought out if we go to 9 games by then.
I kinda hope we do. Tired of seeing the 3 pansies and a decent team rotation.
So far we will play UTC, Oklahoma, and Arkansas State...I would like us to add another lower tier team from the Sun belt to finish the schedule out
Tennessee Volunteers Football Schedules and Future Schedules
Thanks for posting that! I knew we were playing most of these teams but didnt know the dates. Went by UConn last year...surprisingly nice! It's way out in the country. I'm planning to go to that one! We also owe N Texas for the 1975 debacle in Neyland Stadium. They were D1-AA & upset us. We played like we did in '08 vs Wyoming!
GT left the SEC in 63 I believe...Bobby Dodd got mad over something. They tried to get back in in the mid 70s but there were still too many hard feelings so the SEC said no. That's when they went to the ACC. UT & GT used to be BIG rivals back in the 50s & 60s. Tulane left the SEC in 1965. Big mistake on their part! The SEC didn't split into east & west until 1992 when Ark & SC joined.
Can't wait for some of these future games when we are rolling again!!!!

I understand worrying about wins but I worry more about seeing interesting games. I hate all the cupcake games and wish we would never schedule another Sun Belt or any other cupcake conference again. I wish Tennessee would take the lead and only schedule games with the other power conferences. I don't care what other schools are doing. Stop putting Austin Peay, Western Kentucky and South Alabama on the schedule.
If Tennessee is going to schedule Austin Peay They might as well schedule Carson Newman
No I bolded the part my question was about.
He was saying something about Ga tech trying to reapply for conference membership in the 70s. I wasn't aware such a thing ever happened
Vince Dooley put the kibosh on GT getting back in the SEC in 1979. I still hold out hope that one day in the future GT will be back in the SEC.
