2017 SEC Baseball MLB Draft Thread

Post MLB draft it looks like the #1 recruiting class belongs to Vanderbilt and the #2 recruiting class belongs to Florida. It shows the big hill that we have to climb to get back to winning in this league.

Added some more signings. Also, if a kid announces they aren't signing I'm just putting *Not Signing* in regular font by them. Bolded don't means they have signed.

The Astros have signed their CB pick, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th round picks. All but one has signed for slot-value. They have saved $18,000 so far.

I'm sure the Astros have a plan, but they're running out of places to save enough bonus pool money to pay Bukauskas, who will want to get paid in line with his ranking as the 7th best prospect in the draft, and still give Kyle what he says it will take to sign him.

The first couple of picks Ian going to be over slot

I misunderstood the Astro's signing list. They saved $67,000 on their 2nd round Pick.

Saw that Jordan Rodgers signed with the Braves for $5000. Braves spent heavy on early picks.

A damn shame

It is a joke and pro baseball is as screwed up as the college 11.7 scholarship deal. People all around his pick getting great money and most of them are unproven HS kids. Coming back for your senior year really takes away any leverage.

Yep and that's why KS would be a complete fool to come back.

I dont think he was ever planning to come back and the talk was all leverage. He would have to have a huge year and jump to top 2 or 3 rounds to really have a chance to make some money. He is a right handed pitcher, with solid velocity that has had serious arm problems and has not consistently produced in college. There are a lot a guys that throw as hard as he does. When he was healthy he was a solid pitcher with a strong upside. I think he now has much to prove. The slot value for his pick is $130,000.00. I would be surprised with his history if he got slot. If he pitches great this summer he might drive the amount up some. I hope it works out for him.

I think he will eventually sign, but appearing to not be as easy as I initially thought as he has been pretty vocal about it taking a lot to get him there (I'm sure a lot of it is just posturing, but he seems like a really good kid, his grandmother definitely did a good job raising him).

In terms of there being a penalty for signing him for significantly over it very much depends on what kind of figure they had in mind for him. If they don't sign him they lose the bonus pool for his slot, so if they thought they could sign him right at slot or underslot they do not gain anything from not signing him. However, if they were negotiating with the thought that they would have to sign him to an overslot deal than they could use any money banked from the top 10 round on Wolfe without penalty, it would just have to count against their bonus pool for the top 10 round (anything over $125,000 after round 10 must count towards the bonus pool from the top 10).

I think Jennings will end up eventually signing as well, but there are definitely scenarios where Wolfe could end up having a bit more money thrown at him.

Jennings signed for well over slot.

Added some more signings and guys declaring that they are coming back. Also, the Astros saved another $150,000 on a signing. So they will easily have the money Serrano asked for unless they plan to go way over-slot on their #1.

Yea well maybe Kyle Wright should have the same attitude instead of demanding 1mil+ over slot for himself.

In the lower levels of rookie and A ball, there are 4 or 5 guys on each team who are expected to make it to the show. Everyone else is there to give those 4 or 5 guys someone to play with and against.

At this point, Wright is one of the 4 or 5. Jordan Rogers is one of those there to compete against and with him. This gives Rogers and those like him the opportunity to prove their worth. His only option is to get a real job.

The system works for everyone. The MLB clubs depend on the 4 or 5 guys to make it and eventually help the big club. The other guys get a chance to play pro ball and a few work their way into being one of the 4 or 5 guys. "So, you're saying there's a chance."

Take Will Maddox. For 3 years, he has been one of the best players for the West Michigan Tigers. But, apparently, he doesn't project as a big leaguer so he can't get above mid level A ball. But, he is getting to play baseball for pay and he still has the opportunity to get there. He just has to convince one team he can do it.

The point remains the number 5 pick didn't deserve the highest signing bonus since the new draft rules started in 2012.

We'll know in the next 5 years where the money was better spent. Hopefully, JRogers can get to the show and make the big money!! As for Wright, eventually, he needs to use that great "potential" and actually produce.
