You know my take.The cracks were already there , Trump just went ahead and made the split known .
Trump strategically played on the worst types of divisiveness for power. He embraced and reinforced the us versus them non-sense. When he was rightfully called out on that tactic, he claimed that as proof and it was accepted as such by the most gullible. He intentionally agitated, insulted, and demeaned the other side so he could point to their reactions as even further proof.
Like Roger Stone, Trump's great friend and adviser, so famously stated, "hate is a much better motivator than love."
