2021 Lady Vol Recruiting Thread

The counter post move with the left hand baby hook at the 1:40 mark has me SO excited. I haven’t seen an actual COUNTER post move from our post in YEARS, that skill set for a post player is SO important.

Even though these recruits aren’t ranked as high as we want them to be, I really believe they’re an all around SOLID recruiting class, nothing to hang our heads about.

I see a star in Karoline. She will come in like Marta.

Spot on. It’s old school, but it works. There is a reason this is still around! I’m a lefty and my coach taught me the jump hook in 6th grade. Became a staple. If you really work at it you can go block to block. If you’ve got the short fade from one direction and the baby hook in the other you’re unstoppable. Even if you’re not that athletic it’s very tough to defend, speaking from experience lol.

With her height and athelticism those two little moves would put her in a league of her own.

You're right but Tamari is normally covered with 2 players, one behind and one playing the side. Very hard to cleanly maneuver on the reverse. Happened to Mercedes A LOT and she struggled with it. Got to have people capable of hitting set shots on kick-outs to make opponents play fairly.

Back to the issue, if she doesn't have that move, she will. It's gotta be in the top 10 post moves book....probably Chapter 1.

I saw a jumphook developing from her this season,,,but it needs fine-tuning:
  • Her release is wrong,,,she finishes in a traditional goose-neck,,,but the jumphook's finish is a release like you are throwing a dart
  • Her bring up is wrong,,,with a jumphook you want to bring the ball straight up the body (no arcing out like a traditional windmill-hook or like a George-mikan drill...,,,you scoop the ball at the hip and bring it straight up to a peak and then "dart-release" it to the goal, once it reaches it's highest point in your lift. Since it is a tall person's shot, there is little need for arc bc if your body leaves the ground. you are usually high above your defender(s)
  • This is an athletic centers shot, not a power shot...Kareem was tall and thin, so he had to develop a shot that did not rely on positioning or strength
  • The jump-hook/skyhook should be able to be shot from any position around the rim 4-5 ft out.
  • The Patrick Ewing reverse-fade is a perfect counter move for this

the one playing her side would be on her ball-side, thus the reverse pivot fade would take her in the opposite direction from the help-defender

Both of those moves can serve as a great counter to a double. It’s all about timing and decision making. You often see post players turn the wrong way, right into the second defender. For all her great qualities, this was a constant issue for Kasi. Rennia was also guilty of this quite often, not being comfortable with her back to the basket. If you turn away from a double it does two things.

1. You get a look at the basket.

2. You get a much better look cross court to the open player on the backside.

If a team chooses to double you should punish them. The way I was taught they have already taken their defense out of position. Make them change sides once and then find the open player. If you can play through a double, great, but it’s almost always better to get the angle on the pass to the open player.

If Strip, [in year one] is as formidable as we think she can be, this will indeed open up the world for Key...I sincerely hope Key is totally aware of this and is putting in serious work in this off season...She could be unstoppable...🧡🏀🤟

Marcus Parker has a daughter Naomi Parker who is I think 2 years older (class of 2025) then Candace daughter Lailaa

Candace was on Rennias IG before their game against Michigan and was talking about her niece who was a baller. She mentioned Lailaa was more of a dancer but is really starting to grow (with a 6’4” mom and a 6’10” dad we knew it was coming). But the niece they say eats sleeps and breathes basketball like her dad, aunt, and uncle.

I think Candace is very supportive of her daughter but hopes she picks up ball. She also said Lailaa has some game and picks things up easily. I bet if either can play in college they’ll wear orange 🤣

Brooklynn has been named Miss Kentucky Basketball

Now that we have Samantha to help train the back court to be all they can be, it's about to get real good.....Also, Ms Horston will benefit greatly having Samantha to guide her to the finer points of her offensive game....It's going to be good!
