2021 Lady Vol Recruiting Thread

I talked to my cousin who coaches with a private school in DC.

Interestingly she said some AAU and HS coaches are telling HS targets to wait on committing especially til after the May meeting with the NCAA because that will shake up some of the rosters of the schools they are looking to narrow down their lists with.

I had really never thought about that and I wonder how many of the top targets out there are being told or thinking the same thing. While others may say shoot I’m going to commit now to get my spot others may have that wait and see how schools rosters shake out. There are schools out there that’s roster will look drastically different if the NCAA approves one time transfers.
I agree that is what's happening and why we aren't hearing more right now. Tenn already got Green because that was the big they needed right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tenn is waiting to see who is available before they pull the trigger on the guard position(s). You wouldn't want to fill up spots before you know if there might be something better open up later.

We are all living in a time of uncertainty, fear, rumors re th Coronavirus and each family with an athlete has concerns. Should I let my child play 'this year?' go to a location or distance outside parents comfort zone? So many unknowns. How about foreign players - a source many schools recruit heavily?

My hypothesis: recruiting became even more difficult in arranging an acceptable school-player-longtime commitment!

Interesting, but might be smarter for HS recruits to commit now. A HS recruit commits taking a future spot. Transfers might now see less playing time, decreasing the appeal of that college. Probably also comes down to HS and/or Transfer talent level. Guess, HS recruit could always de-commit if a more talented Transfer commits who would take up playing time, right?

It` depends on the HS recruit, Looking at the top tier in 2021 most should see a lot of playing time.

Two things that came to mind:

Some transfers may be going to their "second-choice schools" from their original recruiting if there is still mutual interest. It may have been a very tough decision which they now regret and want to try to fix.

Others delaying commitments may like us but know that we aren't in the position to be as picky as tbe top-tier teams, so they're taking more time. They're not going to be the "s8gn the same day offered" recruits. Doesn't mean they're not interested.

The portal may very well spell doom for the autocrat coaching style. Too easy to call it quits now.

Given the talent using the portal, it will become a recruiting battlefield that will demand resources to manage. Programs without resources will be at a disadvantage.

Well...Tenn should have the resources...

This is what people wanted. They wanted 18 and 19 year olds to be free to make the sort of decisions 18 and 19 year olds make. It will spell doom for more than just autocratic coaches. Everyone's got their "get out of jail free" card now. It is what it is.

The real problem is coaches aren’t held to almost any standard by the NCAA... nor their schools. And a lot of you seem to not understand the portal... it’s no different than previous transfers w/ a few exceptions.

- open contact by all schools
- no stopping from going to any other school in any conference
- open list provided by NCAA to all schools

Players still must sit out and lose a year of eligibility. The virus is why things are so hectic rn.

Updates on a few now ex-2021 recruits:
- Isaline Alexander, a 6-3 PF from Canada who had visited in the fall, committed to Michigan State
- Jada Malone, a 6-3 F/C from Texas, committed to Texas A&M. Not sure how much interest Kellie and her staff had in Malone.

I feel like because we already have Striplin and are targeting Teonni we likely aren’t putting a ton of focus on other forward type players for that class. We really need some guards in the next couple classes. We have suffered so many transfers from the guard positions.

So here is something to think about. Football season ticket revenue and broadcast revenue pay for almost all sports (men’s basketball pays for itself at some schools.) If the football season is cancelled or played without fans where do schools cut their athletic budgets? Lady Vol Basketball will be fine because it is the 2nd/3rd most popular sport at UT. Will there be other schools that will cut women’s basketball? I realize this is highly unlikely but I recently heard that during the Great Depression many schools cut various sports.
Crazy times.

The Group of 5 commissioners have already jointly asked the NCAA to relax requirements with regard to mandatory school-sponsored athletic teams for FBS schools. Right now FBS schools are required to sponsor 16 varsity athletic teams in order to qualify as a D-1 school. Some schools have already announced cuts of some programs in the upcoming year in anticipation of reduced revenues. Cincinnati, for example, has already announced that it is eliminating its men's soccer program.

We have Striplin committed... I think if Key, Puckett and Wynne were totally in, they’d have comitted by now. What is the hangup? IMO they’re waffling... We may lose all 3 and not get a PG either... All this is possible... Need some good things to happen recruiting wise... Other SEC schools gobbling up good players... I hate to say this, but Vanderbilt has out recruited us here in the last year.

I have my list of known recruits that have an interest in Tennessee . Total was 30..... now 10 are off the list and we got Striplin out of that ten players ! There are 20 left and 12 of those are guards , ( 5 point guards).

We need a point guard and another guard would be good ! JMO

Of the other 8 players we are interested in .....
Teonni and Pucket seem to be our best chance of getting? Hoping for a top ten class ! 🤔

No way to draw any conclusions until the top recruits like Key or Puckett and a few others commit elsewhere or commit to Tennessee. I haven't seen a player that has committed thus far that was any type of Tennessee lean. We have until November but more likely will know a lot more by June or July of where these players are headed.

exactly...no rush, the only rush is what is happening behind the scenes that we aren't privy to

Kaiya Wynn’s stock is rising after Ensworth’s terrific season, and she is now ranked #23 overall in the class of 2021, per espnW. Among the most athletic players in the class. Per her mother’s twitter page, she has had virtual/home visits with: Tennessee, Louisville, Penn State, NC State, Kentucky, Alabama, Arizona State, Boston College, and Miami. We did add two off-guard players in 2020, but keeping Wynn in-state should he a top priority for Harper.

Morasha Wiggins and Jasmine Shavers both received offers from Nikki McCray at Mississippi State recently. It’ll be interesting to see her and Kellie battle it out for recruits over the years.

We have one recruit for 2021 and at this time still have four scholarships to offer. The ideal would be Key, Puckett, a point guard and combo guard Wynn. All four or any of the three will do quite well for that class.

Assuming everyone stays, we will have 9 going into 2021-22 season and assuming McCoy has only this year left. Can you still have 15 on scholarship?

You know your right I was crunching the men's numbers women are still at this time allowed 15. So yes we have six to give as McCoy is a senior next season she didn't get an additional year.
