It wasn't last year when they gave it to Joni Taylor instead of Gary Blair whose team was the surprise conference champ over the heavily favored SC team. The criteria for Coach of the Year award has always needed to be spelled out in detail for everyone to understand what all goes into it, because there are so many different ideas on what those criteria SHOULD be.
* Should it most often be the coach of the best team with the best record?
* Should it be the coach who did the most with less, with their team performing way above pre-season expectations?
* Should it be the coach whose team had to overcome much adversity to still finish high in their conference?
* Should the criteria also include a coach's ability to recruit a roster full of top players?
I'm sure there are several more others can think of. My point is that until someone reveals the thought process behind the choice, then folks are going to argue about it.
It seems most often -- though maybe not always -- to be the coach with the best record and whose team is projected to be in the Final Four at least.
I personally thought Tamari would get a share of the DPOY award but apparently leading the nation in blocks isn’t enough

Personally, I would have given this year's award to either Kim Mulkey or Kelly Finley for their ability to way exceed expectations for their respective teams. Doug Novak would be in the mix too, if not for the injuries that pretty much railroaded MSST's tourney hopes.

Just glad Howard wasn’t POY. She turned it on the last two games trying to get some recognition for herself.
Yeah, I'm with you in not discounting what Dawn has accomplished. She may five stars from 1-15 on her roster, but she needs to get them to buy in, play together, and accept that they won't get the minutes they would've liked. And she's done that, and will continue doing so with the next group of 5 stars she brings in.Agreed. I'm a huge fan of Dawn Staley, but I'm not sure she's had to do as fine a job this year as she did last year. Mulkey and Finley coached the ish out of their teams.
But like I sad above, if things like recruiting prowess are taken into consideration, Staley is absolutely crushing it in the SEC. And she has certainly kept her team sharp for 99% of the season, having only one letdown. That takes some doing for a coach to keep a team focused a whole season. Staley is a great coach, no doubt.
