2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

Huge win I Have to say Rickea is back in the lead for MVP those two huge baskets she made were the difference.
Yes, definitely, BUT . . . the game went from a 10-15 pt USA win to a nail biter bc of her getting the T. That just can't happen. I was so worried our shot at the gold was going to go bc of that. Everyone can see by now that unless Betts has a mismatch down low, RJ is our offense. It falls apart when she's off the floor.

But happily she did get the chance and took full advantage, her two buckets late were the difference. And how satisfying was it for the winning bucket to come on an absolute power drive on Edwards! No takedown and scissorlock tonight! The work in the weight room already paying off.

LOL RJ was def player of the game, everything about her game influenced everything for good and bad. Ended w 11 pts, 6 rebs and an assist. Jewel had 2 pts a reb and an assist. Whew, this was nervewracking! Can't believe I was this nervous over this game. Bedtime!

It was fun again to wake up and read everyone's posts about the game and not have to bite my nails while doing it. For those who have been watching, I am intrigued about the role Jewel has on the team. She plays a lot, meaning that the coaches have confidence in how she could help this team. I know she has a couple of games in which she seemed like an important cog on the team as one of the more reliable 3-point shooters. MY question is why isn't taking more shots. Only one shot is almost 20 minutes last night. My curious mind comes up with a variety of possible explanations, such as not being able to get open enough, being open but the point guard and other players not getting her the ball, her getting the ball but either being passive or being coached that the main shooters need to be the bigs, and so forth. I know assists is a major weakness of this team, so I assume that might be part of it. I don't buy the explanation that a couple of the negatively biased posters have said in that it is because she is going to be like Tess and have difficulty scoring any points against good defenses. If that was the case, why was she such a major and consistent scorer against so many good teams in the ACC in which the game plan was to stop her from scoring. I am especially curious of any thoughts and comments from those who actually have watched some of the games.

My theory

You know how Freshman are "handled" by the older players in the NCAA...How rookies, exceot those in running for ROY are pretty much also-rans in the WNBA...NOW, triple that scenario

Team:
Brazil; average age 28, oldest player DeSouza 41
Canada; average age 24 oldest player Alexander 32
Puerto Rico; average age 26 oldest player Oneal 33
USA; average age 22 oldest player Jackson 22

You've got players like DeSouza playing in her 100th FIBA-Americas game...And a Bevvy of 30 year old moms who are playing for their country and playing in their only "time of significance" of some of their lives. Couple that with WWE officiating, with non-called hooking, defenders bowling through screens, and picks that Brawn Stroman would appreciate. And Refs who are obvious in their country-bias calls. If anyone wants to argue that loook at the Brasil semi...PUR must have felt like we did when we go to Alabama each year.

Then you have USA. For the most part very clean playing, fundamental basketball players who are used to refs actually calling fouls. Jewel Spear had some absolutely beautiful post feeds and went off for some 3 pt barrages early, then she got hammered a few times and changed her game to a more ball-control direction. The heavy hitter guards like Raven Johnson can go toe to toe with the bully-older women-guards,,,but Jewel is not as much of a fighter,,,yet.

This experience will be good for Jewel bc the guard play in the SEC is much more physical than the ACC, or any other conference...I wouldn't worry too much about how she will be here, but there, she has had to adjust her play/role to a physicality like she has never seen.

Hope this helps

Not sure how the freebie works, but I payed 6.99 for my pass at
Watch Live Basketball | Basketball Live Streams - Courtside 1891
So I could see other games and scout the competition

The free signup uses the exact same page. Coach Jumper is correct if you want to watch the other teams you have to pay the 6.99. However, if you only want to watch Team USA play for the gold medal tonight then create a free account, login at the start of the game, and go to the game for USA and click on the live feed. You can see the game and live stats but you have to refresh the browser to update the live stats.

Nothing to worry about. Basically, the guard play on this team is a mess. They insist on playing Kelly and she's hurting them bad. Guard roles don't seem to be defined very well. It became obvious probably from the start of camp that Rickea is far and away the best offensive player so I believe they want to mostly go to her. But she's getting blanket coverage so it's hard to get her shots. Also obviously, with Reese and Betts they rely alot on rebounding and putbacks. They badly need a consistent 3 ball shooter and Jewel hit 3 crucial 3s a couple of games ago. She also seems to have good court vision and is a good passer.

The big thing I see with Jewel is she's going to need lots of work on defense. But she said this herself when she signed, she's athletic, smart and willing so she'll be fine. She'll also be much better overall working in a good, organized system.

Jewel seems a great teammate w a great attitude. Her Dad is there, they got him involved in a halftime dance last night!

Confession time, and it actually feels good. This tourney has made me feel way less hostile toward Angel personally, while also making me feel much less scared of her game. She seems to be really trying not to act like a jerk so much and I love that she's been very honest and forthcoming about how limited her game is. She's always going to do a few Angel antics and always going to seek out the camera. But she's been far less disrespectful of opponents, maybe owing to the fact that some are the age of her mother and would love to clock her if given half a reason, I hope the new humility carries over.

Also, this tourney has made clear that Rickea is a much more skilled and effective offensive player than Angel. Not even close. I'm sure the W has noticed.

Hear, hear. I agree wholeheartedly, especially about Angel.

I watched the game last night from the tip to the final seconds rolled off the clock and USA was clearly the better team.
The officiating was pretty much detrimental to USA extending and holding the double digit lead which in the 2nd half especially when Canada settled in and got favorable calls from the refs made the game close.

Jewel Spear is comfortable and willing to accept a facilitator role on this team. In 2021 on USA 19U team Spear started over some highly recruited players including one of UCONNs prized guards and scored 14 pts before sitting out the tourney due to COVID-19.
She could average more shot attempts=more points. I truly feel she is preparing for her arrival in Knoxville. She is a great passer, has remarkable basketball IQ, and is skilled handling the basketball w/ exceptional quickness. She is focusing on playing team oriented basketball and with the talented roster in Tennessee she knows this season is going to be a special one. Also being fair to her against some critics on her defense, there has been some moments where Spear has shown grit and gotten her hands on some crucial steals in close games.
Rickea completely dominated the best post player on Canada’s team in Edwards. This was a mismatch of tremendous proportions. Rickea is the most talented basketball player in WCBB. She has improved her dribbling and 3pt shooting. Check out the footage of her clutch baskets in the final minutes over Edwards and its reminiscing of the SEC tourney victory over LSU against AR. Knowing who the best player is and seeing them put the notice out to the rest of the world was the reintroduction of Rickea Jackson on the national stage.
Hopefully a big win tonight and another great performance sends off RJ & JS back home to a warm welcoming in Knoxville for the start of another championship run.
Tennessee is a contender for the 2023-2024 nat’l championship.
The FIBA performances of these two elite playmakers have entrenched the LVols into my Top 10 Preseason Rankings.

Outstanding play here. Controlled ball handling, finesse basketball skills, and powerful explosiveness all in one play!
