2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

Going to be 10:10 pm EST for USA game really surprised at the late time but that seems to be what is happening.
It's an 8:10 start down there. It's the second game, first semi about 5:30 their time. Apparently not concerned about our EST sleep lol.

Hopefully primetime on a weekend will help attendance. Except for RJ and Angel's Moms and a group of school kids yesterday, the gym has been virtually empty.

Betts will get a real test tonight with the powerful, very experienced Edwards. Reese's matchup w Edwards will be very interesting as well.

Interesting but yesterday especially in the 2nd/3rd quarters Colombia made their offensive runs attacking Betts in the pick & roll. That’s where she struggled.
Canada could exploit that even more with their talent.
Based on the scrimmage highlights between Canada-USA, I expect Canada to put their best post player on USA best post player and leading scorer which is Rickea Jackson.
Hopefully if Reese and Jackson both get going tonight they can match Edwards and company skill/athleticism.

Defense is for certain the reason Betts did not see much time at Stanford. She’s a complete offensive post IMO and one heck of a rebounder. Unfortunately she is not a natural defender at all.

16pts and 14rebs but her +/- was only 3 because she kept getting burned defensively.

They were all over her yesterday and she had 5 turnovers, but she also had 2 steals and 4 blocks. She’s young, guessing she’s still improving her game.

Another thing, where Reese seems to get several rebounds off her own shots, Betts makes most of her shots, and has been shooting around 75%, I remember seeing on one game, maybe more.

Interestingly, the only USA players yesterday with - numbers were Hsu, Kelly, and Marshall.

A little more physical development and mobility will help Betts on D in the future. She's already a pretty good shot blocker.

There's a third place game tomorrow in addition to the gold medal game. Those games are around 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm, alot more friendly to us on EST.

At 6'7, most your bigs aren't going to be the fastest or most fluid.

The defensive aspect of things will be a huge test early for her at UCLA. Playing in the Cayman Islands early, they potentially face UCONN, LSU or VT should be a good challenge for her. UCONN spreads the floor so well and keeps bigs moving on reacting so quick. LSU will have lots of physicality inside like most Mulkey teams with a variety of looks between Reese, Morrow, and Rosario, VT has a veteran in Kitley back for her 5th year.

At 6'7 she has a massive advantage being able to reach for rebounds and score above most defenders, it will be interesting to see how she does defensively in NCAA this season. The goal for many teams will be to get her away from the rim when possible because going straight into 6'7 players isn't a winning recipe.

Looks like Rickea has been in the Gym and not Skipping Leg Day. The Definition of getting your body WNBA ready. That extra strength should help her play through double and triple teams this upcoming season.

The two Osborne threes were huge. I wish we could pass better but still played a good half. Canada can rebound we may need to play three bigs and just two guards. Glad to see Reese and Barker showing up today both playing well.

Just the opposite, lets run four guards at the and make them adjust

Good game overall by team USA. Up 39-29 at half. Rickea having a very good game, has 7 pts, 2 reb and an assist. Very smooth, very in the flow. Guarding and being guarded by Edwards alot, no scissorlocks so far.

USA subbing alot, Rickea would have many more if she didn't keep taking her out and if they could find her for shots when she's on the floor. Jewel has played some, hasn't scored.

Betts has two fouls so her play has been limited. Reese seems more in synch but still slinging everything from her shoulder. Give her credit for honesty, she said herself yesterday she gets lots of her rebounds bc she misses so many shots. She and Edwards have played pretty much even. USA hitting shots much, much better. Another half like this and its a rematch w Brazil for gold tomorrow night.

Just watched the top scorers highlights. Rickea looked really smooth around the basket.
