2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

Not a good showing for team USA. Starting Betts forced Rickea to play much of the game at the SF position out around the perimeter in the offense. That isn’t going to help USA win a gold medal. This team has to run the offense through Rickea in the post. That’s a fact.

2 for 19 from the three wow!! I didn't think we could ever shoot that bad. About 20 turnovers. We'll see if they can get it together right now the guard play is ugly they can't shoot or pass the ball.

I think we missed about 10 free throws as well. Just a horrible offensive performance. We couldn't throw it in the ocean today. On to the next game.

It is better to have a bad showing in qualifying rather than get to the medal rounds and get beat in the first game.

You'd never know USA youngsters were coming off a rest day and those old ladies for Brazil have now played 4 straight!

Rickea needs help. She needs to give Ole Ang the talk she gave Jordy at halftime of the LSU game in the SEC tourney. When it's this obvious she's the only offensive threat, it makes it really rough on her. At least she hung in and fought, unlike the USA team captain who has compeletly disappeared, except to smile into the camera at the end of the game. AR's literally slinging the ball towards the basket these days.

Speaking of Jordy, Barker going into soph yr reminds me sooo much of Jordy in yr 2. You know it's in there.

Jewel played alot, but not so you could tell it. RJ had 6 turnovers and shot miserably, but alot had to do with having multiple defenders and impossible situations.

I don't know how possible it is to coach this team, but they look very poorly coached. Forget this mess, come back tomorrow.

Yes but just created a lot of questions about this team. They are not playing as a team more like a McDonalds All American game. They need to find the open player and avoid the bad passes and one on one play. Need to make free throws really need improvement in every area of the game. Cuba tomorrow hope we play a better game.

Remember, they were counting heavily on Reese, promoting her as the "Best Player in the Tournament". Has not aged well to say the least.

Without her, and with the guards playing as poorly as they did today, RJ is on an offensive island.

I was totally expecting a lot more out of her. She has been by far other than board play a player that has not helped at all. Actually I think we do better by moving Barker ahead of her going forward.

None of the players or coaching staff has adjusted to international basketball. The starting lineup and rotation makes no sense to be honest. Start either Reese or Rickea but it can’t be both and right now it’s obvious who the better player is through 3 games. By far though the player who has completely came in and never once played within the scheme of the offense or defense is Kelly.

I will say I like the mental advantage if we could get to play them again. I don't think there is anyway we shoot the ball that poorly again. I think it will still come down to them or Canada versus USA in the title game.

They said she’s the best player in the country, the reigning mop of the final four, well that’s until Rickea takes the crown next season.

Kelly has been a one on one disaster really don't know why she is playing so much. She was shooting bricks all day and four turnovers. Rickea had six turnovers they are collapsing three on her she needs to look for an open player when they do that.

That is true. Only player Kelly defers to or tries to set up to score is Reese. If it’s not Reese then it’s dribbling to take a contested jumper or attacking the basket to force a layup. As for Rickea turnovers, some should’ve been called fouls on the defender. This could be a good experience for her with how inconsistent SEC officials will call games.
OAN: This is my first time watching some of these USA players and honestly I no longer will rely on the media to tell me who is good.
This is good exposure for Rickea and Jewel but the sooner they get back to Knoxville the better!

Totally agree. Haven’t liked Kelly since she got the technical in the first game, by slinging her elbow into the other player’s face. Reese has not helped at all, and Kelly has hurt, including dribbling so much at the end of this game, when we badly needed to be scoring.

Betts was high scorer with 11 points, and 15 rebounds.

Hope we do better tomorrow, looks like the game against Cuba is at 2:10.

Reese is a very good player who IMO looks extremely rusty for not being in the gym and focused on her NIL bank account all summer... but we all know the best player in the final four was Alexis Morris, not Reese. Heck I was even more impressed with Ladazhia Williams to be truthful, who was highly efficient scoring and a great defender.

Unless Reese just magically turns it on moving forward, you may have to look at the other post options for more minutes. Reese doesn't look physically fit right now and its evident she hasn't been practicing as much over the last few months as the others. She is missing FT's left and right, as well as blowing layup after layup.
