2023 Americup ... USA Gamethread(s)

This was a good game for the team. They had to work hard for it down the stretch. I was impressed with the defense the opponent played in the post cause we have some elite post players and they were finding it really difficult to score in there. Were going to need more out of Reese she has been the surprise that is not playing up to her talent to this point. Brazil will be tough we will have to play better.

I was impressed with the coaching decisions and subbing
They knew when to go to small ball and how to stop the 3 barrage

I wish I could have seen this game, but the boxscore sure looks like Argentina was no joke, and I'm actually glad. If Kea and Jewel are challenged it will stand a far better chance of helping them for Tennessee this coming season than a series of blowouts will.

Not seeing whether or not all the shots were good ones and not forced, i just hope Kea's teammates are on board with her taking so many.

And yeah, I expected Reese to score more, but she is a BEAST on the boards. Gawd how I hope Tamari is able to increase her rebounding numbers this year. We really need her to own the boards like Reese is doing. Of course, Reese has a lot more quickness, so there's that.

Brazil used to be one of the main powers in international competition. Anyonecelse remember Janeth Arcain? She was really something! Izzy Castro and that strong post de Souza were greats, too. I hope they make a good showing.

I watched the contest. Rickea Jackson was facing a lot of double and triple teams. Some of the misses were due to contact while in the act of shooting which in collegiate sports is called a foul but not consistently in international play. Her teammates aren’t as efficient a scorer on team USA as Rickea despite her percentage being down right now. I knew it would be a matter of time before they started to drop and Jewel Spear nailed three 3pt shots that were daggers. I worry about #9 and #10 in big games later in the tourney can they play within the team system. Some of the ISO basketball and turning down better options to score has to be ironed out and accepted moving forward. Rickea Jackson is the best athlete on this team and she is unselfish. At times too unselfish.

de Souza is still playing, at the age of 41! She had 3 points in 11 minutes today, but the post combo of Kamilla Cardoso and Damiris Dantas are getting the bulk of the minutes for Brazil. Kamilla had 15 points, 15 boards, and 4 blocks today. I think this game will be a good challenge for Team USA.

Brazil beat Venezuela 90 to 76 so it will be a close game. We won by a few more points, but I expect another single digit game unless we just get on a roll.

Also to anyone who wants to see the rest of the games. You can see the USA games by signing up for a plus account and designating USA as your team. A plus account is free, but you can only see the USA games. To see all the games of every team you need to pay 6.99 for the tourney.

Indeed, Rickea was often doubled when she got anywhere near the dotted line. ANd she did have to take some difficult shots, that said, they were not bad decisions, but forced decisions as her teammates were not hitting their outside shots and getting deep into the shotclock.

I was very proud of ARG. this game...She was the go-to player on offense.

Of note, only when we finally got an outside threat did Argentina extend their defense and give RJ some open looks...Kudos to Spear, she WAS the only 3pt threat for USA at all!

Going further back in the early 90's they had the best backcourt on the planet with Hortencia and "Magic" Paula. The Americans' loss to the Russians in the 92 Olympics, followed by losing to the Brazilians in the 94 World Cup is what finally led to the development of a core USA team for multi-year training heading into the 96 Olympics instead of the usual method of throwing some players together to practice a few weeks before the games. Obviously the rest is history, the Americans have only lost one major international basketball tournament since (the 2006 World Cup) and the success of the 96 team was the catalyst for professional women's basketball in the US. That great Brazilian team actually had a profound impact on the future of women's basketball in this country...

Jewel may not have started this game, but she got the 3rd most minutes of our players, was our 3rd highest scorer, and was in the game at the end when it counted, making clutch 3’s. For the game, she shot 42.86%, all 3’s (3 of 7).

Rickea was our high scorer with 17, and also came up with 100% free throw shooting, making some big shots at the end of the game.

Both Rickea and Jewel really stepped up at the end of this game. Can’t wait to see them playing together for Tennessee this season! GO USA and GO LADY VOLS!!!

I am at a location in which I can't pick up the game so I have really appreciated all the posts here describing the action and details. I look forward to more updates on the 4th! Go Jewell and Rickea!

If you listen to any interview with her, she says she needs to work in her D. She's aware.

@LadyVol1908 she also said that was a factor in choosing us... She can keep her man in front of her but when she was lost on switches that's to be expected. She will learn how we play defense and get better. This is not a knock on tess but if tess could get better in help side defense so will jewel that's just a testament to our coaching staff and the work she put in.
