2023 Recruiting

After covid year stuff will we go back to transfers having to sit out a year. Bad on me not knowing, I should try to “keep up!”🙄
No they can sign during a period of months now every year and be eligible to play immediately. I think it is March to July. If you transfer during these months you are eligible for the next season. If you transfer after that time August on you have to sit out the coming season and will be eligible the next season. This is permanent until the NCAA changes it again which I doubt they ever will.

Due to NIL, the portal may be a bit more dry in future years. NIL deals can be structured so that the player is financially staked to the university that they signed with.
The players that will get that kind of deal will be less than 10 percent. The mid major stars that get it will probably be 0. I disagree the portal will have plenty of players that can play at a high level from now until the rule is change if it ever is.

I think some of these kids have handlers who are pushing them to go where the money is. NIL wasn’t established to pay hs recruits to sign with a school. It was established to give them an opportunity to earn money once they get there. The Tennessee collective has already raised 4.5 million for student athletes plus you have OMD and the Lady Vol Boost(Her) Club and Edie, even as a walk on, is benefiting from that. Kellie has put someone in place to help the team with creating their brand. Tess has a ton of NIL deals because she’s out there working for it. Rickea got an NIL deal with a local dealership and got a custom Charger in her deal. Kellie is going to do it the right way and not do back door deals. If we play to our potential and get to the final 4 this season, we’ll get the recruits. You’re going to have kids that are chasing money and kids that are chasing championships and I for one, will take the latter. If a kid chases the money, I would think they’re all about me and not about we

You're right. But I'm right too. In 4 years, players like Jackson and Hollingshead will be unavailable due to constraints of their NIL deals, but players from lesser schools like Powell and Franklin will still be available.

Which makes getting a couple of high schoolers and a couple transfers still the way to be very good every year. The need to sign four or five high schoolers is no longer a necessity.

I agree. We need 1 or 2 very high quality HS recruits each year and use the portal to fill needs around them so we never have a down year. I think a reasonable goal is to have Elite 8 quality roster every year. AND we have that right now, so no reason to panic. Still I'd like to know that we have our NIL house in order. It may be there, it just doesn't seem like it when we had 3 targets that seemed like they wanted to be here and now it seems that they have received "offers they couldn't turn down" elsewhere. We need a system in place where we can match anything any other university is offering with respect to NIL.

So we can’t be valid in our concerns about recruiting without it considered “whining”?!….yikes, but pretty typical of this board when you don’t agree with the majority.

No matter how long of a paragraph you all type out or how you slice or dice it, it’s still not going to change my opinion that recruiting elite high school players is a challenge for Kellie at the moment. Every other school in America went through some of the same challenges we did, including coaching changes, and haven’t had issues recruiting.

The same people who are saying we’re whining and overreacting are the same people who said “Tennessee recruits itself” when Holly continued to pull in elite talent, despite the poor floor product and noxious environment. If that’s true, it should still happen. I’m in the camp of not wanting to roll the dice and have to rely on the portal year in and year out, DESPITE the wonderful talent haul this staff managed to pull last year. It just feels too risky for me. I prefer to see matriculation through our program. I enjoy watching the ladies grow and mature, on and off the court! You tend to have a stronger connection with those type of players.

Im not coach Kellie (please stop calling this lady Kelly you all) and I’m going to support this team not matter what or who is here - I’ll be in the Bahamas to watch them play, but at the end of the day, I’d love to start seeing Kellie become a force on the HIGH SCHOOL recruiting trail! We have some elite talent in our yard these upcoming years, I’m hoping Kellie can rein them in!

Definitely in order in football and men's basketball don't know much about what is going on in women's basketball. I know all the girls have a lot of local deals. Looks like Jackson, Horston, and Key are doing very well and saw that Hollingshead has a few deals working. Some coaches gonna publicize deals and some are not. I think Harper is one that won't. I think she is going to need to make it part of the recruiting pitch right away as I know other schools are already doing that. If we can have an 8 million dollar QB that hasn't played a down yet we have enough money deals that will satisfy women basketball recruits.

Not exactly. If a player transfers after the grace period, she will have to apply for a waiver to be immediately eligible. If she were transferring to Tennessee, her waiver would be denied. If she were transferring to Notre Dame, she would be granted the waiver.

Thank you for saying this. It's OK to call a thing a thing. And to do so doesn't have to be read as an attack on Kellie and the program unless it's obvious that's the intent. Doesn't mean I'm dismissing the improvements that have been made since Kellie arrived --- or the recent portal success. Doesn't mean I'm not excited about the season. If any other high-profile or big name program(s) in WBB went two years without receiving a verbal from a HS recruit, we wouldn't hear the end of it on this forum.

Not true. Paige Bueckers is a mid-major star, and she is reported to be earning over $1 million/year in NIL compensation.

Actually, NIL was established so that the schools weren't the only ones profiting from a player's name, image, and likeness. Players who were contributing to a school's profits from athletic revenue were thought to be entitled to some of the profits the school was generating. That would include current players and even high school recruits like the Manning kid who were contributing to advance ticket sales and television revenue. But since only (some) football teams and (some) men's basketball teams turn a profit, NIL was expanded to include all college athletes (if U.S. citizens), whether that student-athlete contributes to the bottom line or not, including female athletes. Student visas do not allow foreign students to work in the U.S., and all women's college teams lose money so there are no profits for them to share. Therefore, NIL was expanded so student-athletes could profit from their name, image, and likeness, even if they played in a non-revenue sport.

UConn is not (and never has been) a P-5 school. They currently are (and always have been) a mid-major school. The fact that they attend the Final Four every year doesn't change that fact.
True

that said if you are truly a star I think you will get lots of opportunities no matter where you play. Considering the hype Paige had coming out of HS and having an outstanding freshmen season I'm not surprised at what she is brining in NIL wise despite UCONN not being a P5 program.

Just picked up three five star players and one player that has proven to be a five star and one four star player in the portal and high school no reason you can't do that every year. One or two high school players and make up the rest in the portal is something that you could do every season.

You're dreaming if you think Harper (or any coach) will replicate this year's transfer class every year. We need top high-school recruits--period. And we have no idea how this year's transfers will pan out.

A portal recruit is a previous high school recruit just one with experience that has already played. You don't know how any player will pan out high school recruit or portal recruit until they play. Sticking to facts you know how portal recruits have played in their careers so no reason to believe they can't continue. High school recruits when you get past the top thirty usually need at least one season to adjust. So you basically have 100 schools going after 30 top high school players and almost all the rest will need time to develop. No not dreaming players that were recruited lied to, told things that didn't happen will be in the portal and I agree you need a couple high school players every year, but you can also rely and get two or more competent portal players as long as immediate eligibility is a factor.

Not a power five member but Big East is still considered a major conference and regardless was talking about players that flew under the radar as high school players, but proved themselves in college at a mid major school. That would not be anyone in the top 50 Hoopgurlz ratings. That would be players like Dye and Franklin that were outstanding but never ranked. There are at least 30 to 40 players like that every year.

So wat time is she committing? I'm visualizing lady vols uniform in her commitment
I'm guessing she is just going to drop a video at some point today. There isn't a official time.

A bit discouraging that Maria and none of the other insiders know much, that doesn't sound good for us.

Right...There's no sign at all.. Maybe we're getting a different style of commit today. I can't give up till I see her video.

It makes no sense that LSU would have more NIL sway than the LVs. As a native of Baton Rouge, it is well known around LSU circles about concerns about how LSU might not be competitive with NIL due to how poor the area is, that Louisiana is always in the bottom 3 in having successful companies (the bedrock for NILs) and #1 in brain drain (college graduates leaving the state). Moreover, LSU is such a football, baseball, and gymnastics school (leads nation in attendance for the latter 2) that both the men's and women's basketball only draw crowds if they are very good. LSU NIL money mostly goes to the above sport, with an LSU gymnast scoring a huge deal. I think that their recruiting success now has much more to do with having Kim as head coach and the best 2023 player being from Louisiana making the odds for the 2023nsignees being on a national championship team than NIL.

I agree. But….I truly don’t understand wanting to play for Kim.
