2023 Recruiting

They're not Harper's recruits and it's silly to suggest that they are. Recruiting and signing a prospect is the big job--takes many months of work--and a lot harder than persuading someone to stay. This isn't a knock on Harper, just a fact. She deserves some credit for persuading them to stay--if in fact they were thinking of leaving, and maybe they weren't--but that doesn't make them her recruits. And this is the big question: Can Harper recruit as the same level as Warlick? For now we know the answer to that question.

What would the answer to that question be after her recent signees ?

Well if she's good she should've been playing. But they're seeing that Kellie can develop them now

Word is she suffered a broken nose early in the season and got behind her competition, and never caught up. She had a poor year offensively, but played well defensively. She was top 5 recruit in the nation. Word is also she asked no one to contact her via the portal, so she knows where she's going. She has 3 years of eligibility left. I say you can't have too many guards. Sign her up.

The transfers? They seem like they can help us--and, yes, you can say they are Harper's recruits---but then the OP wasn't about the transfers, it was about players who were already here when Harper arrived.

In any case, recruiting has become a two-stage process now with the rise of the transfer portal, and if a coach can land transfers effectively than it can compensate for less-than-stellar high-school recruiting. Indeed, one can argue that the portal has become more important than the high-school market, because you can get players who are already experienced and productive and have already been developed, or mostly so. That's a big deal. A lot of big programs will now recruit fewer high-school prospects because they're bringing in two/three transfers a year.

The portal situation is worth a discussion of its own, as the transfer market can be hard or perhaps unfair to players already on your roster. Maybe you've got a rising soph who didn't play much as a frosh but has definite potential to play more in her second year, maybe even become a starter--but you, the coach, are able to land a talented, accomplished junior transfer who plays the same position? Suddenly, the soph who seemed ready to play might be looking at having or wanted to transfer herself. It's become quite crazy, to say the least.

Thanks for explaining. I never knew that.

Yep, you're right. If we sign Saniya Rivers, who was recruited as a PG to SC, then does she share those duties with Powell? Does one win the job and the other be the backup? And to your point about a rising sophomore, what happens to Miles? What does she do if she loses out in the competition? If she wants to play, she hits the transfer portal. This thing is a double edged sword for the players. I guess it is a Darwinian way of everyone finding their best level?

Rivers was not recruited by SC as a PG; she was recruited as a wing/off-guard. It just so happens that her ball handling and passing is good enough that she could play back up PG since Raven Johnson was injured early in the season.

The portal is indeed a double edged sword, but it can work to the advantage of both the player and team.

Saniya was a guard in high school. I think Kellie is the kind of coach who has an idea of how a player can contribute to the team, but she also asks the player how she wants to contribute.

Sorry. Please shift my post about Rivers to the Transfer Portal thread.

I agree we need to be careful because bringing too many players from the portal at the same time due to team chemistry and playing time. At the same time, we can't afford not to go for the best players that Kellie and Sam think are a good fit here. We are losing extremely talented players next year, so we will actually go downward if we don't pursue top talent in the portal and in recruiting. I do feel for the players who might lose some playing time, but that is an issue faced by all of the current Final 4 teams that are stacked with talent. We have to have it as well if we want to start being one of those teams. Kellie will at least do it in an honest and sensitive way. Also, I didn't ever notice that Pat hesitated to bring a load of talented players in one class even if it hurt the feelings and playing time of less talented returning players. Our best team ever had 4 extremely talented Freshmen who helped us go undefeated. It is true that some may get discouraged and leave for greener pastures, but I do think Kellie's loving touch and her desire to go deep into the bench may minimize this. For those who still chose to leave, it will be sad to see them go but it may be the right personal decision for them. Meanwhile, we will be on the road back to being an elite team!
