Reed Sheppard is one I wonder if we pursue, at some point. 6-3 shooting guard and the son of Jeff Sheppard (mid-1990s Kentucky player) and lives in London, KY. I’ve seen him play a couple times. He’s really good. Athletic and a great shooter. Totally carries his team on what would be a very average North Laurel squad if not for him. He could probably benefit from playing amongst better competition. He is #39, overall, in the new Rivals rankings and holds offers from Louisville, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Arizona State, among others. UK hasn’t offered even though his dad was a beloved player for them. His mom is a former UK volleyball player, as well. Cal is just very guarded against offering instate players for some reason.

I remember his Dad. His pull up jumper was deadly.

Yeah, he was a key contributor on the 96 and 98 national title teams for Pitino and Tubby, respectively. He might have even been the leading scorer for that 98 team, and by mid-90s white guy standards, he was a heck of an athlete.

His son is pretty much a carbon copy.

wow, would love to have a player like that... his dad would stop on a dime, elevate, and shoot the lights out... never seemed to miss against us for sure 😑

We don’t have any new names from what we’ve thrown out over the last month as to who the staff will be making it a point to see this month. They seem to have a fairly defined core of prospects they’re focused on in 2022, and even a pretty well established board for 2023. What will be interesting over the coming days and weeks is who gets added to the board (or taken off) as the coaches get a chance to really see some of these guys first hand for the first time in ages.

Here is our list of guys (and it’s entirely possible I’ll leave a name or two off) who will most definitely be seeing the Power T logo on shirts court side at their games in the coming days

2023

Caleb Foster
Bryson Warren
Kannan Carlyle
Gregory Jackson
Justin Edwards
Layden Blocker
Landon Johnson
Cameron Barnes
Isaiah West

UK offered Sheppard, yesterday following Cal watching him at an AAU event. I'd guess he ends up there now that he has an offer.

...Cal is just very guarded against offering instate players for some reason.

That makes sense, especially in Kentucky where (aside from race horses) UK has been the preeminent enterprise in the whole state for several generations. I believe there's a psychological issue with in-state players coming to play for their state's legendary team. We've seen it happen with our football team in better times.

A kid grows up with the dream of playing for his beloved [Wildcats, Vols, insert home team]. It becomes his primary motivator to practice, train, perform, and achieve (over-achieve?) at a level which will garner attention from his beloved program's coaches. And finally, he gets the scholarship offer!

Dream achieved.

And that's always the potential problem with in-state players: do they have motivation to achieve more, or has their dream been achieved by being on the team? Given their storied status, I think Cal is appropriately prudent to go extra-slow with in-state talent.
