2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

Elite player if JJJ doesn’t return. Can’t fault him for following a familiar face last year.

Good player. Not elite player. Besides, he is a mostly a wing, maybe a 4 and we will still have a lot of players fighting for minutes in those areas. I think Barnes and staff are mostly going to look for a PG and C/PF in the portal.

He would likely be our best player sans Phillips if we added him. Great athlete and size.

If all you’re looking at is PPG and his high school recruiting ranking, sure. He’s not a bad player, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t want him taking minutes from Phillips, Dillione, or Mashack next year. Those guys need all the 2/3 minutes we can give them and he’s not a true 4.

He’s better than Mashack. No idea with Dillione at this point. I would gladly lose a guy like Jefferson to add him. But still plenty of minutes to go around if Dillione is backup PG and Phillips able to play more 4.

Travis Henry and Doug Roth are the only Knoxville players that suited up at Tennessee until Bowden, Pember and Edwards came along.

Knoxville produces more P5 players in baseball and football than basketball.
Don't forget A.W. Davis. Rutledge technically isn't "Knoxville," but close enough to count.

I’m just honestly puzzled. Knoxville rarely produces P5 caliber players. It’s not exactly a lucrative market for recruits.

Most of the D1 prospects from this area are projects at best. People need to understand that so they don’t get so tilted when we don’t give major minutes to a guy like B.J. from day 1.

I want to win games first and foremost. I don’t care if that involves Knoxville kids or not. We definitely don’t need to be putting players on the court that aren’t ready just to have a hometown player get minutes.
Agree with every bit of this. I watched BJ Edwards a few times while he was at Catholic and he was a good player in high school but there was nothing there that told me he was a key contributor at a D1 school as a freshman. I see a lot of people on Twitter (aka basketball IQ h***) calling for BJ Edwards to get more minutes. From what I’ve seen up to this point, I’m not so sure why a player like DJ Jefferson got redshirted and BJ didn’t other than us not having depth at the PG position. I assume that’s why.

Because we recommended to Edwards that he redshirt but we didn’t force it on him and he declined. Jefferson was told the same thing that Edwards was told, that minutes would be limited, and he decided redshirting was for the best.

Dilione is "The Truth" and Jefferson has so much more potential than Murray, especially considering Murray's numbers while bouncing around from school to school. Can he even transfer, again ? Cobe is the answer in the portal, anyone after that is gravy

No he doesn’t. Based on what?

And his last 2 coaches got fired. Not really going to hold that against the kid.

Brandon Murray would be in the NBA if he had the freshman season that y’all are acting like he had. He’s not some can’t miss guy and he’s certainly not at a position of need. I don’t get the obsession w him at this juncture.

Why would we expect to land a guy who should be in the NBA in the transfer portal?

You’re being a smartass when your original post was asking if a bad player wanted out of his current situation? Congrats, I guess?
Bad player. Lmao, troll.

Yeah, totally being a smartass asking if a guy we pursued last year was looking to transfer after his coach was fired again.

You’re the one who sought out this interaction with me, boss. Don’t know why you’re calling me a troll when you originally responded to my comment and essentially agreed with me that there’s no need in pursuing someone not in the portal (and that kinda stinks - even tho you vehemently disagree with this). Seems like you’re just trying to make a fool of yourself on this late night.
