2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

Guess he was never really “in the portal”. Just following his previous coach. Not sure why he stuck around this past season?

I feel like Cade and JP could both have an impact next year at least off of the bench. They’re both a little thin but so was Aidoo
I think both are more aggressive than Aidoo and could be better offensive and defensive. We don’t block many shots around the goal without fouling and giving up 3 point plays. On the other hand, we get a lot of shots blocked inside and do not shoot a lot of free throws. Thr 5 position has been our weakest position followed by the 1 position. These 2 position have proven to be the keys go winning championships. While we have the reputation of having great defenses, we often struggle to score points if we don’t hit close to 40% of our shot behind the line. We need some short term help from the portal.

If he chose to follow his former coach then whatever, but I’m sure we will have plenty of other options to choose from in the near future.

Well yeah there’s time but that’s kinda how it went down last year but not as late? I assume most of the work has already been done with these kids by now behind the scenes. So we could be behind the 8 ball again.

Are the freshmen coming in at PF/C expected to contribute or need a year or two? See a lot of posts about bringing in a big man, and thinks it makes sense if we can get an impact guy but also really like what we have in Awaka and Aidoo going forward.

If the freshmen can give some decent minutes, plus we go small some with Phillips/jjj if both/either return, not sure how much a PF/C is a must have unless they’re an impact guy.
They both likely will need to play in my opinion backup minutes at least. Only thing that could change that is if we get a big in portal. Otherwise all we have returning is Aidoo and Awaka at the position. Phillips played some 4 in this offense but he needs to get alot bigger and is more suited to 3.

Reaching much? Besides, I said I want no part of Will Wade players...not players he recruited or tried to get (that'd eliminate half the country LOL). Phillips never played a minute for Wade, Murray did. Big difference.

Are you Brandon Murray or something? You seem to be pushing hard for this guy who isn't even in the portal.

I think we've already got the type of body/player Murray is with Jahmai Mashack, DJ Jefferson, & Freddie Dilione on team already with much more time in our system. Even if we lose all our seniors the portal pickups will be need based and Murray just isn't going to be a need especially if Phillips returns.

PG is a need and we'll likely have a need for another seasoned/proven big with ON and Uros both potentially gone.
Correct. PG and a big are necessary in the portal for the 2 spots we had left. If anyone else transferred maybe we go for a third. Even so I would think a good perimeter shooter would be next in line, given we lose Vescovi. Murray doesn’t fit that either. Murray should have joined us last year. Even if he entered the portal just doesn’t seem to be a need for him now.

Barnes likes familiarity and Des Oliver is now unemployed, so I wouldn't look past him. Maybe Rick believes we need some new blood, though.

I think new blood may be a good idea. I’m sure Barnes has a ton of contacts and he is well respected among the coaching fraternity.

To be fair if work has been done behind the scenes it would be considered tampering again, which i don’t think Barnes would do.

Other than the big you’ve heard about have you heard about anyone else? I’m sure there’ll be a lot more options at the end of the season, but getting a PG should be the main priority.
No. Cobe reached out to our staff. The big also has connections to our staff. I’ve heard nothing else.

Jameer Nelson Jr. was at George Washington for 2 years and then Delaware for two. Has improved each season though, would be a good get as a grad transfer.

Think he has 2 years left with the COVID season.

Edit: also he averages over 20 ppg, but the bulk of his points come from driving to the rim and getting to the FT line, would be a perfect PG to bring in.
thanks for mentioning GW days -- woht pursuing
