2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

The point is. Barnes does better with upperclassmen so why not try to build a rosterer of them?
Yeah, upperclassmen that he has developed in his system over several years. Not mercenaries off the street on the fast track for one season. Remind me of the upperclassmen we've taken from the portal that have made a significant impact, so far. Should be a short list.

What are the chances any of our seniors come back. Key is obviously gone. Uros, I think should move on. Josiah I am 50/50 on, and ON also 50/50. I would like Santiago back. But do we expect any of them to come back. Any word? If y’all had to guess which ones are more likely.
I don't see any of them coming back and wonder if Phillips will opt for the draft vs returning. Of course, I'm in the turn the roster over camp so that's not just my opinion, it's my hope. Thanks for all they did, but this program needs new blood.

You are correct it is short. The portal hasn't been a thing for very long and we haven't taken very many. Not a very large sample size to look at.

I see the portal as a way to bridge the gap/buy time until the younger players are ready. Let's be honest. This years team was very fortunate to get as far as they did with this roster. Now we have to start from scratch. Can't say we have a slam dunk SEC starter on our roster right now except maybe ZZ. They might blossom, but even our 5 stars over the last few years have needed time to grow into this league. When I look at what Kansas St has done and where they are now, I'm envious. Not saying build a roster that way, but you can cover a lot of warts and fill some holes thru the portal. Barnes needs to get over it and embrace the damned thing. It's here to stay. Why tie a hand behind your back in the SEC wars. Get in there and start swinging.

Transfers have existed since the dawn of time. The portal has just removed the red tape and made it easier. And you’ve ignored the fact that our successful upperclassmen have been homegrown talent, not free agent splashes. Name me one impact transfer in Barnes's eight seasons.

Here's the list...
Tyrese Key
Justin Powell
Uros Plavsic
Victor Bailey
EJ Anosike
James Daniel

You missed the easy one. Uros

I’m not asking anyone to be hopeful. We are probably a good PG and a scorer away from being top four in the SEC. I don’t see us winning 25 games next year unless we sign some mystery freak that I’m unaware of.

True. I hope we’re able to find that PG and scorer. Feels like our track record of fighting for players in the portal hasn’t been the best, but hopefully we can break through this year and pick up some game changers. We really need Dillione to be as good on offense as advertised. People describe him as “a walking bucket” and it’s been a long time since we’ve had a player that is a natural scorer. I hope he can do it.

Probably, but that's with taking one or two. Surly if you take several more than one will be successful.
I'm not against the idea. I just prefer a blend of recruited players who have developed in the system, and transfers who can make an immediate impact. I'm just not a fan of completely flipping the roster year after year, and I think we have some foundational pieces worth hanging keeping around. Kentucky has tried this, both with freshmen and transfers, and has struggled to find success doing it.

Oh I’m definitely not letting Mashack go. I might want to keep him more than anybody. Best defensive player on the team, could easily develop into the best perimeter defender in CBB next year. Only player who really drove to the rim last night and looked like he wanted to be on the court late. Already has a decent jumper. If he can grow as much offensively going into his junior year as he did in his sophmore year, he’s gonna be extremely valuable

I think Kentuckys problem is the guy on the sideline. Great recruiter and excellent when he can out talent anybody, but not good in game.

Yeah, I’m fine with that idea, too. Believing in Mashack takes some faith and projection. Would you trade him, as-is, for a wing who scores 17ppg, 37% 3-pt shooter, can get to the rim and score, and is a decent enough defender? I might because it addresses immediate needs, especially offensively. Mashack might eventually develop into that, but I can see the argument of taking a bird in the hand, especially for those who, right or wrong, simply want change for the sake of change.

Well, I’m only calling the transfer a bird in the hand if he put up those numbers in the pac 12 or something. If he did it in the big south, I’m keeping Mashack. But even if there’s a transfer with those kind of numbers in a major conference, I don’t see a scenario in which we can’t fit him in without losing Shack. Should have space anyway, seems like a guy like that would be the number 1 take for what looks like two open roster spots for transfers, and if not, feels like Jefferson or BJ or someone would still go first
(Idk if those numbers you posted are associated with an actual player out there)

No particular player in mind, and I agree, no reason we can both keep Mashack and sign the impact wing, even at the expense of someone less proven/talented than JM. I’m just speaking hypothetically.

Fair enough I’ll do the hypothetical then. If I assume the transfer only has one year left… it’s close to a coin flip for me. Probably seems ridiculous but I’ve been singing Mashack’s praises even when he was a freshman and looked like a deer in headlights to most. I just really dig the kids potential. If the transfer had two years left like Shack does, I’d have to take the transfer there

You guys are severely undervaluing Aidoo. He’s the most talented 5 during the Barnes era. Got to go way back to recall a 5 I think was equally talented. Guys like that don’t grow on trees. Rim protector who can rebound, run the court, and has a nice 15’ jumper.

Love Aidoo, he's in Tier 2 though. Mostly because of what you said. Our most talented (and highest ranked) 5 during the Barnes era. He's played 54 games and averaged 14.6 mpg (it was 18.3 this season). Has had only 4 games scoring in double digits, has only 2 games rebounding in double digits, and only 15 games with 2 or more blocks. I think this next season he could have a big time break out year though so I would be happy to have him back.

Awaka has 2 games with 10 or more rebounds already and 2 games with 10 or more points. That's appearing in only 34 games and averaging just 10 mpg. He also didn't get an off-season to prepare on campus since he played with his AAU team into the late summer. Just feel like there is a lot more upside potential and put him at Tier 1 because of that.

My gut tells me Phillips won’t be back next year, so we might have room for 3-4 portal players. I think he’s going to roll the dice as a 2nd round pick or transfer. I wish he would stay, but I have this sinking feeling he won’t be here in a few months.

I’ve said this before, Phillips had a lot of yucky tack injuries all year— wrist, hand, hip. His best basketball was in the early season. He has a great relationship with coaches and knows he’s been a letdown. I also see his body language, lack of success/fit and frustration about it. If I were reading just that, I’d say he’s gone, but I think it’s actually more complex than that. I’m pre-season practice he was taking our best defenders on the drive. Don’t know where that guy went.
