2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

I’ve said this before, Phillips had a lot of yucky tack injuries all year— wrist, hand, hip. His best basketball was in the early season. He has a great relationship with coaches and knows he’s been a letdown. I also see his body language, lack of success/fit and frustration about it. If I were reading just that, I’d say he’s gone, but I think it’s actually more complex than that. I’m pre-season practice he was taking our best defenders on the drive. Don’t know where that guy went.
So do you think he stays or goes?

Love Aidoo, he's in Tier 2 though. Mostly because of what you said. Our most talented (and highest ranked) 5 during the Barnes era. He's played 54 games and averaged 14.6 mpg (it was 18.3 this season). Has had only 4 games scoring in double digits, has only 2 games rebounding in double digits, and only 15 games with 2 or more blocks. I think this next season he could have a big time break out year though so I would be happy to have him back.

Awaka has 2 games with 10 or more rebounds already and 2 games with 10 or more points. That's appearing in only 34 games and averaging just 10 mpg. He also didn't get an off-season to prepare on campus since he played with his AAU team into the late summer. Just feel like there is a lot more upside potential and put him at Tier 1 because of that.
Awaka doesn’t appear to have the length nor explosiveness to be a strong rim protector which we need. Not many 5’s in the SEC I can think of that are underclassmen that I would take over Aidoo. JMO

Pember has since said he plans to stay at UNCA, which I kinda thought he might do all along. He's likely grown accustomed to being the big fish in a small pond, and he's seen how the other side looks of not playing as much as you like.
Surprised he’s not listening to NIL offers as I would think NIL is hard to come by at UNCA?

Because next years team has very little experience, and those teams haven't fared well in years. Hit the portal and load up on JR, SR and grad transfers.
Next year’s team is lacking experience and your solution is to… run off everyone on our team who has experience playing together? Galaxy brain.

The kid you “despise” in the post above led the PAC 12 in 3’s made this season but go off, king
What’s your weird obsession w Krissa? He would be an awful fit here. You’ve been told this 100 times in this thread. Not only that, but he’s not coming anyways.

Yes. I want to see him do well. I think UNCA could add some help for him. If he could go to Michigan and get solid minutes and have a great season, I’d love to see that, I just think he’d be wise to stay at UNCA and get Big South POY again. He also could take advantage of that Covid year couldn’t he? Next year would be 5th year? So he could always move to a p5 for 6th year. Am I mistaken?
I don't think he can play beyond next year. That will be his covid year. Two years at Tennessee and two at UNCA, so far.

I think Krissa is precisely the profile of transfer that we need to be aggressive on - a guy who has produced at a P5 (or relatively close) level. These guys from the low to mid low majors just seem like a complete crap shoot. The productive transfers that stick out to me - your Keyonte Johnsons, Nijel Packs, etc., are not having to acclimate to a completely different level of basketball while they acclimate to a new team. JMO.

His teammates all hate him. Zona fans hate him. He is not even close to the level of a KJ or Pack, who had a track record of being a prolific scorer. I’m not sure anyone who has watched a lot of Arizona ball this season would really want him - not a knock on anyone who hasn’t, but the stats do not tell close to the full story here. I agree we need some P5 talents to come in, but we do not want to be bringing in guys like KK to fill our needs.

Just pointing out the hypocrisy of saying this guy is a cancer I hate him, but where are all the reliable 3 point shooters at? He’s not the only shooter in the portal as of today (and there’s been no indication UT has shown any interest) but he’s inarguably the best one

Thanks. It would be a great story for him to come back home and finish here. I don’t think he’s quite ready, but I also have been proven to be an idiot by many on this board many times, and I’d love to add one more time to the list on this one.

The fact that he is leaving an equally, if not more, currently successful program, should tell you all you need to know. He can hit 1000 threes for someone next year, but there’s zero chance he would be a take for us and with very good reasoning.

That’s fair. But this thread is about an equal mix of just random people that have entered the portal that have no links/interest to UT (category he falls into) and random Missouri Valley Conference guards that claim interest from UT and end up committing to an even more obscure school than they were at before.

I agree, I wish this would be more of a UT interested transfer thread. But it’s completely off the rails lol

Phillips biggest change if he stays will be his strength and size. I imagine he would make quite the gains in the weight room with another S and C offseason program.

I don’t know what kind of change his frame can take. He can put on muscle, of course; but he may not ever get enough bulk to play hard inside. I think the key for Phillips is space. If we can score from other spots, he can shoot and drive.

I think JP goes off next year if he stays. I hope he does. You didn’t ask me, but I think he stays
We've been saying that about certain players every year. At some point, you just have to accept a player is who he is. Case(s) in point....JJJ and ON. Just one more year and the light will come on, right? They'll explode into a first round draft pick. Yep. One more year.

Conversely, let’s write off every freshman based on what they do in their first year. Better to do that instead of running the risk of ending up with some deadweight upperclassman like Grant Williams or Admiral Schofield.

He’s a true freshman who dealt with a few nagging injuries this season. If he were a junior I wouldn’t be saying that.
