2023 Transfer Portal - General NCAA Thread

I would normally agree that pushing out contributors to make room for players from the portal can look bad, but I think it’s different in cases involving covid years (with scholarship limits), players who have already gone through senior days, and have tested the NBA waters two years in a row.
I was referring to guys who are in years 1-4 in the program. Barnes likely went into their homes and told their parents he would he would develop their sons into good basketball players and good young men. Kicking them to the curb prematurely seems shady to me like a guy dumping his long term girl for some hot chick he just met. The guys you described are different to me although I’d give JJJ a ton of latitude to come back based on the equity he’s built with the program. Again, JMO and I don’t expect others to share my same level of loyalty to existing players.

I’d take Knecht over BJE or Jeff 7 days a week. I’m assuming all this means we’re done in the portal though.

If I’m coach CRB, If Knecht seems likely I tell JJJ that if he wants to rehab this off season and give it one more run then he’s got a spot but I have to have an answer otherwise there won’t be a scholarship available if Knecht jumps on board. Pushing existing players out in order to sign portal guys just doesn’t seem like a solid way to run a program. JMO

Bringing back JJJ, even to RS and Knecht would require pushing 2 existing players out though.

BJ Edwards and Awaka both just got named to VOLeaders Academy too, so I honestly don't think BJ Edwards is going anywhere unless he chooses to.

I'm fine if we don't add anyone else and JJJ/JP both are gone. Lots of youth going into this upcoming season and we actually return a good bit of experience. Minutes for 2 to 3 players are probably pretty set, but the next 6-8 guys will have to earn them and I like the idea of the young talent having as many of them as they can get early in their careers.

Yeah, I hear you. I would just say that if the coaching staff is convinced that a player is not going to contribute as much as expected based on progression, then you can argue that they’re doing what’s best for both the program and the player to encourage them to go where they can play. We want a program built on competition and not everyone can make it.

Giving honest feedback vs pulling scholarship is a wide divide. Nothing wrong with honest feedback IMO

It's a catch-22, I suppose. The staff is obligated to do what is in the best interest of the program. Having players who choose to explore professional opportunities while still having eligibility puts the program's stability and best interests at risk if we pass on suitable replacements while those guys figure out their future. Those players aren't being forced to pursue the NBA. It's merely an option they've chosen. If Tennessee decides they can't risk the position it puts the team in to wait for their ultimate decision, well...it's a business decision. The players know the risk they're taking. Despite the fact that they are playing by the rules, so is the university and the staff. Not an enviable position to be in, certainly.

I don’t disagree with your point concerning the guys trying to turn pro. I was referring to the regular guys who are expecting to stay 4 years.

Oh, my mistake. I thought was the crux of your position. That we should be waiting on the decisions from those guys mulling pro options before moving on to other options. I must have misread.

Yea - it’s the “force out Edwards or another guy if we need another spot” narrative that I find offensive.

Hunter Dickinson come on down. Damn. That sucks. Was really hoping he’d go to Maryland or Georgetown. That Kentucky roster might have the most collection of talent on one roster since the Anthony Davis team.

If Cal doesn’t get far in the tournament with that roster, he’ll go down as the most overrated HC in college basketball.

If we add Knecht, those two games against UK next year will be battles. While UK will have more pro talent, we will have some serious talent and experience ourselves.
