I really don’t understand the lack of concern over Trump’s actions via-a-vis the transition in 2021. Particularly from the “limited government” crowd.

I can’t look at history and point to a major government that isn’t/wasn’t answerable to the electorate but was a “limited government” and preferrable to our current system.

This just shows Trump's transactional view of the world (and how it's perverted so many on the right). Everything falls on one single scale of value. Accordingly, everything can be ranked as better or worse than anything else. In his mind, achieving the pinnacle in one area (artistic achievement) can be measured off against the pinnacle in any other area (service to your country), and if you come out the other end all in one piece, isn't it better to achieve the pinnacle as an artist?

That's not how most of us think. Being a great parent, or being a hero for saving your countrymen, isn't to be ranked off against an NBA MVP award. They're not commensurable values. There's a whole literature on this if you're interested.

They are not in the same category and should not even be compared. Except in name only. Given for two completely reasons. Criteria and standards for the Award are completely different. Trump will probably hand out this award to a Jan 6 tourist/rioter/bystander. Not in the category. So don't try to lump it together or justify it or blow it off.
The double down was just as bad and dumb. Best to not say something than to open your mouth and prove you have no understanding of what you are saying.
