I get what you are saying but the two aren’t mutually exclusive. We are a republic that uses democratic elections to determine representatives. (I DO think a return to having Senators appointed by State legislatures instead of popular vote would be a good thing).
As such we Are not a direct democracy. That is the beauty of a Republic. If properly done; it gives you the benefits of democracy without The craziness.

Never really considered that, currently there is about 11 million undocumented in the US, most of which arrived prior to 2010. The US population is over 330 million. If poof all undocumented were gone tomorrow there would be no big demand change, there would be a huge supply change.
