2024 SEC Tournament Bracket (Update after 3/6 games)

I get that, but if we’re whining about playing three days in a row, getting four days of rest, then having to play a 15/16 seed and no better than a 7 seed two days after that, we don’t deserve to be in the national contender conversation.

Well, I would say TN deserved to be in the contender conversation in 2022 when that exact scenario played out and we got beat by an 11-seed in R32.

Again, I’m not saying I’ll root for a loss, I want us to win the SECT. But I do think there is some utility to get an extra day of rest and to mentally reset the team. Sometimes you can be overconfident if you’re riding a big win streak into March.

I'm not necessarily worried about them being tired. Don't want unnecessary injuries

First I apologize ahead of time, but I just watched the Vol ,Texas replay of 2006 where Lofton vs Durant.. I've always had a question but never a forum to ask it. The next year Stephen Pearl got the starting nod over Childress. I always thought Childress was far better, that Pearl just started his son. Am I the only one?

I don’t disagree with anything you said, but we weren’t beaten by Michigan in 2022 because we were tired. We simply got outplayed.

I don’t necessarily know if it was because we were tired, but I do think there is some validity to good teams on long winning streaks struggling to maintain focus. Before that Michigan game, we were on like a 10+ game winning streak if I remember correctly and were like 14-1 in our final 15 games.

I’m always cautious with predicting teams that are hot as the sun going into the Big Dance making it super far. That may be entirely anecdotal and there is likely some perception bias in there, but feels like you want to enter the NCAAT hot but not too hot if that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense. A conference tourney loss is good for hot teams because it causes them to refocus. Happens quite often, too - UConn last year, Baylor in 2021, Virginia in 2019, UNC in 2017, etc.

Yep. Good examples. I care more about the SEC regular season title than I do the tournament title. It’s more meaningful.

That was a massive win last night. It's pretty likely that Auburn wins out, so if they had won last night they had a nice inside track to the regular season title.

If there’s a way to get us the 1, and Auburn/Alabama/Kentucky on the other side as 2/3/5 and then South Carolina our 4, that seems ideal!
Oh, it's simple... :)

Tennessee: loses to Bama but beats South Carolina and Kentucky
Auburn: wins out
Alabama: beats Tennessee and Arkansas, but loses to Florida
Florida: loses to South Carolina but beats Alabama and Vandy
South Carolina: beats Florida and Mississippi St, but loses to Tennessee
Kentucky: Beats Arkansas and Vandy, but loses to Tennessee

Tennessee and Bama finish 14-4, but Tennessee gets the 1 seed due to the win over Auburn (Bama split with them)

Auburn and South Carolina finish 13-5, but Auburn gets the 3 seed due to head-to-head win

Here's where it gets tricky. Kentucky and Florida would both be 12-6 and split head-to-head. So it comes down to record against the top of the conference. Florida is 0-1 against us and Kentucky would be 0-2. Does that give Florida the nod? Or do they just use winning %? If it's winning % then it goes down to record against Alabama and that's not good for us as Kentucky would get the nod over Florida.

I still want to sit all started for the conference tournament and play the freshmen and walk ons. Nothing to be gained from playing. It’s clear now that it doesn’t matter unless you’re a bubble team. It’s absolutely pointless. Let the guys have two weeks to get ready for what matters. Let the younger guys play and get some experience. Treat it like an NFL team that’s locked up home field advantage and their division before week 17 treats their final game.

You play to win. You never concede. Playing the younger guys like Carr, Dillione, and Estrella more minutes is one thing but sitting your starters is not what you do. You can understand that a loss doesn’t necessarily hurt you all that much but if you can win a championship then you go win a championship. All these theories are exactly that… theories. If you’re good enough to make a run to the final four then you’re gonna do it regardless of if you had to play 2-3 games in the conference tournament. That’s not an excuse.
Getting a player hurt if an injury getting worse is my concern. We win the tourney championship 2 years ago and it mattered little, other than getting a monkey off our backs. Winning the regular season championship matters more. Conference tournaments and title games are stupid now.

Conference tournaments are all about $$$ at this point. Until every conference puts its championship game on Friday or Saturday, conference tournaments are unlikely to influence seeding simply because the committee doesn’t have adequate time to move the pieces around to accommodate Sunday results barely an hour or two before the selection show.

The sport would benefit from either getting rid of conference tournaments or moving the championship games before selection Sunday.

Exactly. Not worth putting your team through possible 3 games in 3 days and then 1-2 full days before traveling to the to tournament site . I just don’t see the point for a team that’s don’t the hard work leading Uk to the conference tourney weekend. Rest in the work that’s been done over 3 plus months and get the young guys some experience.

Conference tournaments are a joke--a bad one. Waste of time, money, effort. Just another example of how stupid
and greedy college sports has gotten. Let's finish a 31-game regular-season schedule, capped by 18 conference, and then immediately
start a tourney to see who the best team is. Absurd. 18 games, plus 13 OOC, tell you who the best teams are.

Now that the SEC has expanded they need to do away with the conference tournament and just have regular season and playoffs to determine one champion. Some kind of two or four division format will be needed. You play your division twice and everybody else once. Then you have a playoff. Probably something like 8 teams. First round at home. Final Four at a neutral sight.

Without an SEC tournament, where would BIG BLUE NATION load up their trailer trash mobile homes and head for vacation?
