2024 Target List

I don’t know odds. Not sure staff does either. I know we’re the stable play, and they like everything we have to offer, including NIL. I just know they’ve left the door open too.
Mom seemed to love their official visit and raved about it on Twitter. Interacted with a lot of fans and was very appreciative of the attention her son received from fans. Seemed like a great sign at the time. Hopefully we can close the deal.

He’s not visited Kansas so I wouldn’t think they are very much in play, definitely seems like us/WF/VT which I would think assuming he’s someone the staff priorities that out NIL program won’t lose out to those schools.

Knowing that, I'm guessing the Kansas meddling that @Stoerner Fumbles referenced might be some sort of effort to get him to delay his decision or to visit before he decides later this month.

I'd agree, it seems difficult to think we'd lose out to either Wake or VT from a financial standpoint.

I think that if a couple of the 5 that might leave return it will definitely be a better team next year. And the international players all appear to be leaving. JJJ is 100% undecided and JP could really shine if he returns.

There is the PG issue looming however. I kind of want ZZ to sit out and be here for all of the following 2 years. He won’t get to practice with all of the new guys in the various roles over the spring, summer, and fall workouts. IMO it would be better to bring him back after he’s had a year to practice on his new knee and with the new faces.

There’s no way in hell ZZ sits out all of next year because of an ACL, this isn’t the 50’s. If he has surgery this month he has 8 months of rehab before Maui, that’s plenty of time.

The season will have already started 8 months from now. The 2023-24 team will begin practicing as soon as the 2023 NCAAT is over.

JJJ missed all of preseason and most of the first month of the season and didn’t redshirt. It’s not happening. As soon as he can play he’s going to be playing.

Correct. KU has done this in other recruitments too. If he delays, it’s bad. I’d rate that as low odds. Wake has connections inside his family circle. I always fear perks. His mom supports him coming here.

I look at it from a quality standpoint. ZZ isn't going to play in the NBA I don't think. Each of his college years is precious. If he's able to be back at 100% by the time conference play rolls around, I can see him doing it. If it's going to be a situation where he's just not able to get back to 100% or it's going to take him half the season to get there, do you really want to burn a year under those circumstances? Given the fact that we'll have some guys who will need time/development next year, I wonder if just shutting it down and taking a RS might not be the best idea? He fully recovers, the roster around him is more seasoned and ready to compete at the national level and his year is full and a quality one vs being hobbled to a degree for an entire season or the better part of one. All a matter of how quickly he recovers to be sure, but I don't know if it's a slam dunk either way at this point. I just know that if I were ZZ, I'd treat every single game and season as precious. Wouldn't want to waste or miss any part of it.

In my perfect scenario, all of the seniors except for Santi leave, Julian stays, we bring in an elite PG prospect, and we bring in a pure scorer, the best available whoever that might be.

Starters
PG: Transfer
SG: Vescovi
SG/SF: Phillips
PF: Awaka
C: Aidoo/Transfer

Bench Rotation: (In No Particular Order)
Dillione
Maschack
Estrella
Jefferson
Edwards

Depending on who the transfers are that team has a chance to be really good. Lots of question marks but we’ll be an extremely athletic bunch and a very experienced bunch too assuming the transfers are upperclassmen.
JJJ isn’t included in your “perfect” scenario?

Honestly, no. I think Santi is the only player I really want to see return. I’m kind of ready to move on from the rest of the seniors and let the younger guys get minutes.
Understandable, wouldn’t mind seeing him return though, when he’s fully healthy he’s our best defender and reliable scorer.

There's more ways to make money playing ball than in the NBA. Zakai will make a few dollars playing somewhere and probably would want to get there once he's able to do so, particularly if he already has a degree in hand.

JJJ has been expected to move on to pro ball after one more season for several years now. ZZ is expected to play out his entire 4 years. That’s not a good comparison.

ZZ can return and be limited in 2023-2024 or wait and be fully prepared to return in 2024-25.

8 months would be to get back to full participation in November. They'd likely want a good 4-6 weeks for him to get back to speed, and it could be iffy to potentially reinjury his knee. If anything this staff has showed caution for returning players from injuries.

ON's last game was 2-5-2022 and he didn't return until 11-7-2022 from a far more minor injury than an ACL tear.

ZZ should be focused on getting back to 100% healthy before returning to the court, obviously as part of his rehab he'll start working on basketball related workouts before the season starts. But he's a 4 year guy even before this injury, still has a RS he can burn and potential to get a medical as well. With how NIL works he can still make $ from that even while not playing, so no reason for him to rush back.

Juke Harris on his finalists...
Kansas: “I feel like I can fit in their program really well. We are still planning at date for me to visit soon.”

Tennessee: “I’ve got to watch Tennessee play in person and I can see myself playing under coach (Rick) Barnes. They have nice facilities and a great coaching staff.”

LSU: “Also planning on going up there for a visit to see the campus and get the feel of the area and the team.”

Miami: “I’ve watch multiple games on TV and can see how I can fit in the program. Also sitting up a visit.”

Wake Forest: “I’ve been to many games in person. I know my game will not be limited and I can show what I can do every game.”

Virginia Tech: “I’ve been to a game in person once and I enjoyed it. Coach (Christian) Webster has been to multiple of my games and coach (Mike) Young makes sure he reaches out to after my games and after theirs.”
on3

These quotes are a little dated. They were in an article released on 3/2, but were from a previous interview. Reading them, and assuming nothing has changed in the meantime, it seems to indicate it's Wake and Tennessee.

It would not surprise me if Tennessee draws Wake Forest as part of the initial ACC/SEC Challenge next season because of Forbes's past ties to Tennessee.

Per VQ Tennessee is in a good spot for both Harris & Nowell, nothing is final but as of right now the team to beat for both.

If Tennessee happens to win or make it to final game recruiting should go very well for 24 class don't you think?

I don’t think there is much of a difference between Sweet 16 or Elite Eight when it comes to recruiting. You’re one of the last teams remaining, it’s already impressive. Maybe if we make it to the title game you’ll see some extra interest, but even then I don’t know.

I’ve heard we’re optimistic, but that’s a week old. I have also heard we’ve been active with 4/5 other players in the last week. Not sure how they’re covering all this while prepping.

Apparently was at WF with his AAU team this past week so that’s not ideal, like you I think we are optimistic but not heard an answer which we’ve seen before not be a great sign for us.

Somewhat related but also to what you just said, NCAA needs to implement a recruiting dead period or something this time of year…you’re essentially awarding the teams who have struggled by letting them visit players etc while other schools have to juggle NCAAT prep with recruiting so you don’t fall behind on these guys.

Wake sends someone all of his local games. There’s definitely a strong push to keep him. Our staff put ton of work into showing him how he fits. NIL is highly organized. They’ve put all the effort they can into Juke. He didn’t delay and visit KU. I can’t read the tea leaves, but he loves coaches/potential teammates. Mom loves Barnes, which is always big. Gotta feel like we have a good shot. The flurry of action in the portal makes me worry we’re scrambling, but it’s probably just spreading odds to make sure we have options. I don’t like the fact that losers have free time to recruit, but I’d rather be a winner right now and have that to sell.
