Not sure about Malik Mack 6'1" 170lbs

The good he was a 17.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.8 apg player that shot 41% FG

The 3P% being just 34.1% is a bit of a question, especially when you dive into his Game Log over his last 7 games to end the season he failed to shoot 34% in every one. He actually went 7 of 38 for 18.4% from deep.

Gainey is bigger and a known product whose numbers were down against much stiffer competition. Unless Mack is a really good PG candidate for backing up ZZ and then taking over after ZZ graduates I'm not sure why you'd want to bring in another small school streaky shooter...especially one that's smaller than the rest of the roster outside ZZ.

He does have 3 years, so that's a positive and as of right now he's the #1 rated PG in the portal according to on3.
He’s a PG, not a SG, so not fair to look him just as a shooter imo…also, look at his numbers against the best teams the 2 P5 teams he played against, lit them up. Dealt with an injury later in the year that could’ve added to the cold finish.

Makes sense, looks like he has great potential. In a few of their highest SRS teams they faced early in the year before the injury (all on the road too) he put on shows.

at Boston College 18 pts, 6 assists shooting 45.5% FG 50.0% 3PT
at Indiana 27 pts, 4 rebounds shooting 50.0% FG, 37.5% 3PT
at UMass 32 pts, 6 assists shooting 43.5% FG, 50.0% 3PT

Awaka could turn into a baby Tshiebwe next year if he just stops fouling so much and continues to develop his post footwork.
Let’s be fair to Awaka as he doesn’t foul any more than Tshiebwe did, the refs just blow their whistles more. We all spent 2 years bemoaning how much Tshiebwe got away with.

Thomas being a scorer with size is very intriguing. I know we will probably never see another DK in the portal but it would be great if we could get a guy who could average 15 a game on decent percentages.

I know it's Basilio, so take it with all the salt, but he reported today that the kids Tennessee has been in contact with have been told to keep that contact quiet while Tennessee is still alive in the NCAAT to avoid distractions. I'll assume there is some truth to that as it makes good business sense to keep your current team focused and engaged.

He also said there are three kids that Tennessee already feels like they have in the bag. Any truth there? My guesses were Jakobi Gillespie and Saint Thomas were two of them, and now with both officially in the portal, that seems to have some legs, perhaps. But now there is talk of Gillespie perhaps favoring Maryland.

I would guess Saint Thomas, Chaz Lanier, and Malik Dia are the guys he may be referring to. That is my hope anyway.

I’m a little out of the loop until the tournament is over. I hope that means I don’t hear anything until we are two days into winning our first championship. Prior to last weekend, they were very active with Gillespie and Thomas. Lanier is someone they’ve talked to. I’ve mentioned a couple of the longshots they’re trying to get to visit. I do not know if they let Gillespie go, but he was definitely theirs to lose last week. As I said, I’m happily in the dark as long as we keep winning. I’ll share anything I hear.

Appreciate it!

One other note— Barnes typically reviews the season with returning players the week after the season is over. For those who will stay, it’s a meeting about future goals, places to improve etc. For those on the fence, it’s a “what’s best for us/what’s best for you talk. They decide mutually whether a player should go or stay. I’m going to let that play all the way through this year before I say anything. I don’t think any of our core players plan to leave, contrary to speculation. There are a few guys that have complex situations and I think those conversations will be hard. Last year, I spoke before those conversations happened, but this year will let it play out.
