Sheesh. This is ridiculous. Maschack AND Aidoo? We may not even make the tournament next year at this rate. Looks like we paid a heavy price with the basketball gods to get Dalton Knecht to wear Orange.

We'll still have ZZ and other good players. We'll def make the tournament.

At least in the pros the teams that are paying the players get some sort of contract.

We can drop six figures in NIL to keep a player and then they're gone the next year and zero return on the investment (Freddie for example) for the year they rode the bench being paid.

NOW I'm sure Freddie fully expected and wanted to play. But there are plenty of "get my bag" types that wouldn't care at all about what they did or didn't give in return.

If we end up having 3-4 portal guys starting next year, of all the coaches in CBB i'm not worried about Barnes getting them to gel. Many coaches struggle with that (look at Penny), but I think Barnes would handle it well.

The vast majority of our NIL collective is made up of fans. So it's not like the bloated TV deals or coach salaries are what's being burned to help recruit these players. It's $19.99 a month that a fan could be spending on something else that might give them more enjoyment.

Maybe it’s just me but I think it would be kind of disrespectful to Barnes if Aidoo and Mashack ended up leaving while a decision was supposed to be made yesterday.

That really puts Barnes in a bad spot.

I’m not sure how Barnes navigates this. If we lose our entire roster, I do wonder if that pushes Barnes to an earlier than expected retirement. He has had particularly strong relationships with the core guys like Santi, JJJ, ZZ, Maschack, Aidoo, and Awaka. If all of those faces end up gone, does that make him consider if it’s even worth going through a complete rebuild?

I think it comes down to ZZ. If ZZ sees all his friends and classmates leave then maybe he gets fielding offers. Without ZZ on team next year early retirement might be where Barnes goes instead of rebuilding every year.

I wouldn’t say definitely. I worry about chemistry if we are introducing 4 new starters and losing 6 contributors. A lot to reload if we lose both these guys. We would’ve missed the Covid year tournament after losing all that production the year before.

Is he mostly a spot up 3pt shooter or does he do other things well also? That's pretty much all I saw in this particular game highlight. I see he also had 8 rebounds so that's good. Is he a better shooting JJJ that's not afraid to pull the trigger?

Yeah, with small amount of clips on him definitely looks to be a catch & shoot offensive player. But his shooting numbers are extremely good. Barnes may want to speed up his shot a bit but could be messing with a good thing. Perhaps not the type of guy who can create his own shot but really don't know at this point. Would be a good start and he is a combo so could play either 3 or 4. Has been a high FG % shooter for 3 years so no one year wonder. Would expect his FT % to be higher than it is, but decent. Doesn't get to the FT line often.

Sounds like multiple unrelated teams came after our players with extremely high offers. Each team is able to overspend for one player. If its just money, we have to out bid each team for our player. Assume we have a large collective however we were not prepared for players bringing their offers to us at one time. Also, we dont seem to be prepared or want to spend the total sum they are asking for the entire team.

This just blows. We have had to deal with transfer portal departures before, but nothing like the scale of this. It completely numbs my excitement for next season. All of the players we have grown to love and enjoy watching looking for greener pastries rather than graduating a Volunteer is depressing.

I never had any illusion that we wouldn’t see some solid turnover from year to year in the portal era, but an almost literal complete roster remake the off-season directly after making an E8 and winning the SEC is not something I saw coming.

I don’t know. I think theoretically losing Awaka, Dillione, Aidoo, DJ, and Mashack all to the portal alongside 3 senior departures is a much different and more dire scenario than losing Plavsic, ORN, and Julian Phillips to the draft.
