2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Yeah, I really like the idea of having two playmakers in the backcourt at the same time, so I'm all in on Gillespie. We would be small but ZZ isn't taken advantage of very much due to size and from the bit I've seen of Gillespie, he can play off the ball effectively (as can ZZ). Gillespie would be excellent in high ball screen with Aidoo rolling to the rim. Got to respect any little guy who is efficient going to the rim and converting at a high % among the trees. His perimeter shot release is kinda low but that can be tweaked. And given he has 2 more years to play, even better.

We aren't missing anything with Crews in my opinion. His stats may scream DK, but he isn't even close to Knecht when you watch him play. I'm not a fan. Mizzou can have him.

Last time we had it (KC & ZZ) we overachieved and won the SECT.

I'll say this, not sure if it's a positive or negative... but Gainey will be starting next year without a doubt.

ZZ
Gainey
Mashack (or transfer)
Awaka (or transfer)
Aidoo

Carr = first guard off bench
JP = first big off bench
Cade = may see at 5 in small ball, but will also play the 4

This is assuming Freddie and DJ leave. I'm not sure who we'll land...I think they'll look for some size 6'6" or taller, could be a big or could be a tall guard but with who we lose and who returns I think 1 spot will for sure be for a bigger body. I'd love to see us add a true PG with a bit more size than ZZ, someone who can attack the rim and doesn't freak out dribbling in traffic.

Well, I've admittedly only seen very little of him, but I think Carr could start over Gainey. Gainey will have to start shooting a lot better.

I LOVE Carr, but there’s a big difference in who I would start and who I think Barnes will start, some people forget that when doing projections for this stuff.

Barnes is loyal to a fault to his older players and Gainey has earned a ton of trust already being 6th in MPG this year. So I don’t expect anything changes over the offseason. He’ll be better and he’ll most likely start.

I’m one of the biggest Barnes sheep there is, but if he doesn’t think Carr is better than Gainey, and isn’t recruiting someone over both of them, then I am concerned. There have to be better options than Gainey in the portal.

Any kid that is coached by Coach Ridder should be looked at. He is a great basketball coach
Speaking of Coach Ridder, he took the head coach job at Mercer in GA, leaving UT Martin scrambling. He is a great coach.. Comes from a family background in coaching and his father was a great college basketball coach also. Loves the lord and coaches his guys to be the best

Gainey's on ball defense is why he gets as much playing time as he does. Carr has more upside as a shooter, but likely has alot of room to improve defensively. Gainey did shoot 34% from three his sophmore year and 49% his freshman year. Hopefully next year he is more comfortable and is able to revert back to his average.

Browsing through some PGs in the transfer, I wouldn’t be surprised if we go hard towards AJ McKee. He would have more experience as a ball handler. I don’t really trust Dilione or Gainey to spell ZZ.

The first thing the opponent does when Gainey comes in is clear out and let his man take him to the basket. It's either help defense over rotating or a layup. He can't defend that. He's not so bad at other parts of defense like ball pressure out top and getting in passing lanes. Gainey's role on the team is supposed to be to bring offense off the bench. He has shown flashes of being able to do that but overall has not been good. Two guard has to be a portal prority for next season. Nobody on that roster including the ones in the rotation now are very good.

If Tennessee lands JaKobi Gillespie as many expect, we’re done at PG.
True, but I wonder why there's been no movement....at least not any that I'm aware of...between UT and Gillespie? Why the delay? Think Bama already has a transfer. Could it be that we fans are impulse driven to get the first decent name that pops up but Barnes and co. are waiting to see if someone better enters the portal after the tournament? Along those lines, I'm confident in saying that we'll do our due diligence before adding anyone to this roster. I'd have to assume Barnes has seen what a discontented player or two can do to a locker room so they'll be super careful about who they add to the mix. We might end up taking Gillespie, but the fact that they haven't moved on him yet tells me he's probably not the guy they've targeted? Just wondering out loud with my bad takes.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but in my opinion, Gainey wouldn't be getting the minutes he is or likely be on this team right now if his dad weren't a coach and top recruiter. I can't imagine going into next season with him as the starter. Maybe he improves? Still, can you take that chance? I'd definitely add a couple of guards with one being a PG or at least one that can fill in at PG if needed.

We will have a hard time landing a decent impact PG in the portal, I'm afraid, unless there are assurances that we will run both at the same time. And even then, that guy is gonna have to be someone who can also play off the ball and have a little bit of size (6' at a minimum). No one is transferring into Tennessee to sit behind an All-SEC PG. The possible exception would be someone with multiple years of eligibility left that wants to play for a winning program. Gillespie comes to mind. He may be the ceiling of our options, which is fine. He's a really good player who fits the profile.

We haven’t “moved” on anyone publicly, it’s not something the staff is interested in doing while the season is still going on.

I don't think anyone foresaw such a precipitous fall in his shooting percentage. Gainey led all of D1 in 3-pt shooting % in his freshman year for USC-Upstate at a 49.3% clip. He took a big step back towards the norm as a sophomore with a significant increase in attempts, bit still shot a respectable 34.5%. No one saw that number dipping down to 28.7% at Tennessee. That's a skill that typically translates across levels of competition. He's just been in a major funk, like Santi, for much of the season. Unlike Tyreke Key before him, he's at least a threat to drive to the basket, so he can find other ways to contribute, but his strength...the reason he was brought in...has been more than neutralized. Hard to have seen that coming if we are being fair. As a coach's kid, I don't think it was for lack of work ethic and effort in the gym.

I think Carr will become a very good player. His history is scoring and he is taller and very quick which will help him on offense and defense. His upside is very high. I will be surprised if he plays behind Gainey, but one never knows what might come in the Portal.

I don’t know, only because it seems like we always get a transfer who does 10 -15 minutes and either graduates or transfers out again. I agree we probably need a minimum 2 year player towards Awaka’s class at least. I don’t think we need an impactful PG but rather a better ball handler than Dillione and/or Gainey. They both seem sloppy to me and probably better off the ball.

I don’t think Bowell is a true PG so I’m placing him as 2 right now. Placing Dillione as the 1 for now and Carr as the 2. Jefferson as the 3. Phillips 4 and Estrella as the 5 .

Roster by class/ possible position next year w/ 2 open slots.

ZZ most likely getting about 32 minutes
Gainey moves from 18 to 25 minutes .
Mashack will want at least 25 minutes his Senior year from his average 17.5.
Awaka will probably go from 13 to 20 minutes.
Aidoo jumps up from 25 to 28 minutes.

I think the question is do we develop Dillione and/or Boswell and go for 1 and done graduate PG or go for a Jr Transfer knowing Dillione will bounce out

The fact that it's happened to him as well as Vescovi makes me wonder again that it might be some dead legs. It also leads to a drop in FT percentage. Yeah, I know they're kids, but fatigue will still come at some point. Maybe the rest did us good, but I still think it would have been wise to use the bench more during the regular season.

Dead legs reason should come after shooting well with fresh. I don’t think he picked up a ball during off season and thought it wouldn’t be an issue. And maybe if his shot attempts had been similar this year it maybe wouldn’t. But because he played a different role, and has passed up a ton he has been lacking attempts all yr.

Just gotta find it now
