They didn't have any time outs left left because of the one they used on the steal.
Players were probably going on last instructions which were to drive to the basket to get fouled. Refs were calling everything when they did. Just needed to take another 2-3 seconds before you start that drive to the basket. And make the free throws obviously.

Tied game 20 seconds, no shot clock and Richmond got his shot off with 8 seconds left. They could have just held the ball and went to OT. I get that they wanted a shot on the basket and Richmond had a great look there.

But if not for Dia fouling Brazile Ole Miss still gets the ball back.

Nah....you definitely playing for a shot there.
Just want to take it as close to time expiring as you can. Had they had another time out I'm sure they ( players) do things differently.

Doubtful, Cal never really coaches moments like that. Lets his talent just play and often they make bonehead mistakes.

But Hogs not hitting FTs was also a big reason they lost. Strong effort given their injuries.

Cal's strength isn't necessarily X's and O's. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise.
That said, that's a very basic coaching decision that I think almost any coach makes.
It's like you said, injuries. He's got guys handling the ball that aren't necessarily used to end game situations.
Even so, he's got them playing pretty good. Not sure any of the 7-10 seeds looking forward to playing them in round. The decision to stay small and keep taking it to the basket was what almost won them game against a really good Ole Miss team.
Aidoo stepped up, too.

If they get back Adou Thiero back then I think they could make a Sweet Sixteen run...without him though I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose in the first round depending on matchup.

They were projected against Kansas. I'd pick them over Kansas.
Probably changes now, since Lunardi has them as a 9 seed. They have 20 wins and some pretty decent ones down the stretch.
I agree on the sweet 16, probably need Thiero back for any of those hopes. I wouldn't necessarily say they couldn't do it without him. Just a lot tougher.
