I sure hope we can sign several of the top 75 with so many open spots available.

2025 recruiting is painfully quiet, at least publicly.
AAU circuit is over, most teams have set their boards and setting up OV’s. As listed above Tennessee has 6 OV’s on the books and working on potentially 9 more according to that above list. I think it’s quiet for most schools around the country at this time, should start to pick up as the calendar turns to September.

Yeah, not just Tennessee...college basketball, in general. Only 11 high-major D1 programs have at least 2 commitments in the 2025 class, right now. I wonder how much the use of the portal has altered the recruiting calendar for these coaches? In the very recent past, you saw a flurry of commitments across the summer, especially with the introduction of junior year OVs. Not so much, anymore.

What post players are we in on? I know everyone gets all excited over wings but I always worry most about the post in our HS recruiting. We have always recruited wings well(combo guards/ shooting guards/small forwards) But it seems like the team always has depth problems at post and PG. Even shooting guards is kind of an argument. We get all the tweener guys that can play 2-3 positions. Those guys are awesome but its like we forget we need a few specialists. the Loftons, ZZ's , DK's, Aidoo's. I think if we have like 2 elite guys at those 3 spots our roster takes off kinda like last year ZZ+DK meant magic because we rarely have 2 guys at the same time like that who are great-elite at their singular position. It feels like we never have more than one guy at those 3 positions the backup is always a tweener? Is this my imagination? We have had situations where we had depth at PG like that one year we had Chandler and ZZ. When is the last time we had 2 legit point guards shooting guards or centers the same year? Not all threat once, I mean at any one of those? 21-22 is the only time I can remember. I mean it could be argued last year we had depth at SG if you force it and count Santi and DK.

With Phillips, Estrella, and Okpara returning the post is the least of my concerns. It wouldn't hurt to add a project since there will be almost 10 open spots.

I don't think you can count on all three of those guys coming back. I don't think many people thought Tobe and Jonas would both leave, but they did.

I am not referring to this years team that's already a done deal. I mean recruiting. But....

Estrella is a post but up till now there is nothing about him on the court I have seen that makes me feel like if he is our number 2 option in the post at the 4 or the 5 we are set. I just don't. Phillips as a post is a stretch (pun intended). Bro finally broke 200lbs? He is a stretch 4/tall wing not a post player based on what we have seen on the court at UT. Could that change this year? Sure but I think him hitting the portal is just as likely as either of those 2 being more than passable depth in the post..

our current roster (funny note even on the UT website not a single person is listed as a center)
Okpara 6-11 235 (JR) legit post player
Estrella 6-11 241 (SO) Could develop and has shown potential but thus far is a reserve. Scored 40 points and 20 rebounds along with 3 blocks in 25 games last season. Which is kind of wild as short-handed as we were in the post.
Milicic 6-10 225 (SR) should play a lot as a 4 maybe some small ball 5 legit post guy
Cade Philips 6-9 212 (SO) to in 13 games and shocked the world with his 12 points and 18 rebounds the 4 blocks were nice. again the fact he only played 13 games as strapped as we were for bodies in the post...telling.
Darlingstone Dubar 6-8 211 (GR) listed on the roster as a guard could play some 4 maybe in a pinch? We have played smaller there

So realistically looking at it 2/3 (Milicic and Dubar) of the 3 guys that are the top 3 for those 2 positions if Okpara shows out he might be gone also. So best case scenario so far next year in the post we have
Okpara SR
Estrella JR
Phillips JR
Dewayne Brown FR 3star looks like another Barnes special in the making so excited about him.

does that frontcourt make you have championship dreams?

This is the worry I was expressing in my post and the question. Are we in on any other posts because we need at least 2-3. We should have at least 7 spots open next season unless we fill the open scholly we have now with an underclassman. Sure we can grab someone in the portal but id like at least 2-3 high school guys coming in so we have something sustainable. Barnes and staff have shown they can develop players. DK was an exception to the rule. It would not surprise me if Estrella and Philips take a huge step forward this year or next. I am not sure there has a been a single player in Barnes tenure that's stuck around and not developed (but if I'm wrong someone will correct it). You have to recruit as if they won't develop. Plan for the worst hope for the best.

On the list above the only guys I see are 4 stars Caleb Wilson 6-9 205 and Tounde Yessoufou a 6-5 211 PF.... The other names I have seen mentioned are 4 stars Malachi Moreno and Eric Reibe but not sure they have interest in us?

5 players can return. 3 are posts. That’s why I’m more concerned about guards and wings on the 2025-26 team.

Next year will be very different. There will be 9 or 10 open spots. I think that there’s a good chance that all 3 posts will return. Of course, it’s a new world with the immediate eligibility for transfers and big pile of NIL cash to throw around. The strike against Barnes is not having an NBA pipeline of post players.

1 is a post the other 2 are aspiring posts. You have to average more than 2 points a game to be factored into any sort of future plans that make sense. But.... next season might get spicy because the scholarship limit might increase to 15 so our walkons get replaced by walkups.

Yeah I wouldn’t mind it as much as the fact that we have what Boswell, Okpara, Estrella, and Phillips returning and that’s it. I like Dewayne Brown a lot actually too but we literally don’t have any guards or wings outside of Boswell so selfishly I kinda want to know who we get lol

Carr returns as well. Possibly the best of the 5.

So any HS signee would be an aspiring post as well.

I’m not dismissing Phillips or Estrella. They both flashed last year as true freshmen. The minutes weren’t there with Tobe, Aidoo, and even JJJ getting minutes at the 4.

True. Forgot about him. Super excited about him so that makes me feel more comfortable but the point is still there. They’re going to have to use both the portal and high school big time I’d imagine

Too bad that Dilione and DJ Jefferson transferred out. But the staff sees what they can do and might have better options. Freddie’s injury might be one that nags him over an entire career.

When 14 and 15 year olds are now getting offers, Barnes might have a really good plan in place that we don’t see yet.

I hope that the small HS recruiting classes have everything to do with the new environment for filling up top 15 teams’ rosters and not that Barnes is winding down his career.
