With the Portal or Top Tier HS players only approach. I don't necessarily think it's a talent method, but more of a preventative nature / Defense mechanism...

For example why bring in a lower ranked HS kid who may have potential, but in our case with CRB high standards (positive thing) wont likely play much just to turn around and enter the portal a year later.

Where when you target portal and top 50 players more likely immediate impact, and CBB it is more year to year team building than program building.

Hopefully that made sense

Given the number of scholarship players a program can have, you need some guys that understand they probably won't play this year but can be good practice guys. Maybe they transfer out after a year but maybe Coach Barnes likes what he sees and encourages him to stick around.

From the same poster in Trilly’s discord as the one I referred to the other day:

Recruiting

Yessoufu-We are right in it. Probably more than anybody thinks. Arizona toughest competition. Baylor and Cats in it too. Staff absolutely loves him. Great culture fit, Going to be an issue of managing the budget. Probably one of 2/3 guys who we would be willing to go big $$ on.

Ament-Tennessee thinks they’re a lot more alive than people think. Going to be a big ticket $$ item but staff thinks he’s a lottery guy and one of the few HS guys worth it. Duke and UVA both going to be tough but Tennessee may make a really big $$ offer here and they feel like they have a lot more traction than people think relationally. I think Ament or Yessoufu would be the only guys we would be willing to really pony up for. Hope is to land one of them.

Christian Jeffrey-Maryland will be tough but Tennessee very much in the thick of it. Tennessee thinks they’re running 1B at worst

Josiah Sanders-visiting with Yessoufu and Adams in September. Feels like we could get it done if we push at any point.

Amari Evans-visiting for UTC. Tennessee likes him and is in a very good spot. In the group with Jeffrey and Sanders. We should end up with one of the 3.

Caleb Wilson-probably not realistic. Good player but $$ is going to be too much.

Acaden Lewis-Visiting for Bama. Doesn’t seem like we are super in play,

Darius Adams-Visiting the same weekend as Yessoufu. It will be a challenge to land him but we like him a lot

Mullins-Doubt he makes the visit. Just wants to come to the Tennessee/Bama game. Less than a 50/50 shot he takes the visit imo.

Mallory-Feels like we’re the leader here and he’s visiting for Florida. We like him but we’re waiting on the board to develop a bit more before pushing hard. A guy we feel like we could get done it if we push. Still working through how many HS guys to take.

Isaiah Denis-Led before UNC offered. Don’t think we’re putting a lot of resources in after UNC offered. Have to choose your battles. Good player but going to be hard to beat UNC here and not worth wasting time on him

Dante Allen-Tennessee’s done a good job and likes him a lot. Supposed to be in this weekend. Seems Iike Nova is the leader. I would doubt we land him in the end.

Tennessee will host its first official visitor of the fall this weekend with four-star small forward Donte Allen, the No. 77 ranked player in the 2025 class in the on3 industry composite rankings.

Allen just emerged as a target this summer as Tennessee’s staff had ample opportunity to watch him in action. Allen was a summer teammate of five-star Tennessee target Caleb Wilson, who the Vols’ staff stalked all summer.

Allen attends the elite Montverde Academy in Florida and his father, Malik, is an assistant coach with the Miami Heat. Allen also has visits set to Villanova and Notre Dame.

Next weekend for the home opener against Chattanooga Tennessee will host three-star shooting guard Amari Evans.

Evans has previously taken an official visit to Pittsburgh and saw Tennessee unofficially last year.
Evans also has visits set to Ole Miss, TCU and Xavier.

Had a chance to catch up with Malik Allen following his official visit.

seemed like Tennessee really surprised him in a good way on the visit.

Most think that Villanova is the team to beat, and that may end up being the case, but the Vol’s definitely made a strong impression.

has already visited Notre Dame, has trips left to Georgia and Nova.

First they called him Donte and now Malik, it’s DANTE ffs VQ

Volquest needs to hire a guy that focuses SOLELY on basketball recruiting.

I enjoy basketball recruiting news the most followed by baseball and football.

We did not have a football squad at Hiwassee College.

They hired Grant Ramey who did that at 247 but now seems to be lacking at VQ, makes me think it’s coming from Hubbs and that he’s not pushing them for basketball stuff.

It definitely seems that VQ has reduced the coverage of basketball over the past year. They still cover it, sure, but Ramey and Rob Lewis used to be basketball guys and now neither seem to pour that much time into it. They both discuss football on that board more than anything.

I understand that football drives the clicks, but the basketball team deserves better coverage than they get.
