Probably should've guessed it but didn't realize this was behind a paywall. Holon, I'll share the content...
When the contact period for basketball recruits in the 2025 class recently opened, big-manMalachi Moreno was one of the first players that Tennessee reached out to.
The four-star's interest in the program started before then, however. Back in January, Moreno – a four-star forward out of Georgetown (Ky.) – made a trip to Knoxville to watch the Vols take on Kentucky.
Earlier this week, Moreno came back for a second visit and ended up leaving with an offer from Rick Barnes and the Vols.
Following his January visit, Moreno had positive things to say about Tennessee.
"They just say how much they like my improvement in the past couple of months and how they’d like to start building a relationship with me and my family,” Moreno told Rivals.
While on his recent summer visit, Moreno added to those relationships with the Vols' coaching staff and came away impressed.
"The coaching staff is one of the best in the country, and they understand each other," Moreno told VolReport.
- VolReportThe Vols' coaching staff wasn't the only thing to impress the rising junior during his recent visit.
"Oh man – the visit was great," Moreno said. "The campus was very close together, so it felt like its own city. The facilities were top-notch. I didn't learn too much about the academic side, but from what I saw, it was academically sound."
On the court, Moreno thrives around the basket – both on offense and defense. Offensively, he is a very effective finisher around the rim, as well as a solid rebounder. Defensively, Moreno has produced as a rim protector and shot blocker at the high school and AAU levels so far.
While Moreno's recruitment is just starting to take shape, Tennessee should be a factor in this one with the four-star already having unofficially visited twice.
Tennessee: “One of the coaches there, Rod Clark, used to coach with MoKan. We’ve been pretty close, and we talk a lot. They’re honest with me and tell me the areas I need to improve. They text me after every game.
“I like the way they play like Zakai Zeiglerand Kennedy Chandler. I feel like they play like I do. So I think Tennessee has a play style that I could fit in well with.”
At the end of the day…
“I’m going to be looking for a school that fits my playstyle,” Rowe said. “I like playing in the open court, with a lot of screens. Playing in space where I am able to create for my teammates and myself.
