I don’t think he’s their top choice. Many of the boosters are traumatized by the ghost of Shaka. They’ll probably run that to ground first. Important to note that Bennett remains royalty, and Sanchez is his guy. They don’t have to keep Sanchez. They do have to tread lightly, especially since his team is outperforming talent lately.Likely a substantial buyout involved with a first year coach?
I also have a degree from VCU. It's astonishing how successful that department has been in hiring basketball coaches. Not all of them succeed after VCU, but the hit rate for success at VCU is crazy high.Yeah that's a win all around. As a VCU graduate, it's always hard to see their coaches get poached for bigger jobs. Been happening for over two decades and somehow they always hit on the next coach.
There are a few mid-majors that seem to follow that same pattern.I also have a degree from VCU. It's astonishing how successful that department has been in hiring basketball coaches. Not all of them succeed after VCU, but the hit rate for success at VCU is crazy high.
Probably a self perpetuating cycle at some point. Attractive candidates begin to see those jobs as great places to advance themselves, so the schools have better options than other, seemingly similarly situated schools (say that five times fast)There are a few mid-majors that seem to follow that same pattern.
Tulsa did it for a while, as well. Nolan Richardson, Tubby Smith, Bill Self, Buzz Peterson all parlayed success at Tulsa to high-major jobs. Obviously, Buzz was the outlier who flopped, but he left a nice cupboard of talent for his successor at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl.
Xavier has had Thad Matta, Skip Prosser, Sean Miller, and Chris Mack. Xavier is arguably not a mid-major, but they've been a stepping stone to bigger jobs for each of those coaches.
Butler has had Brad Stevens, Chris Holtmann, Todd Lickliter, and Thad Matta.
