2025 Target List

I know you’re super plugged into the recruiting scene, so how do you feel about Mallory? I like him a lot as a prospect and he can feel the zakai role somewhere down the line.
I really like him, I don’t really love his decision making if he thinks holding out for Virginia and Sanchez is the right move, but I digress.

I know you’re being mildly sarcastic. I’d love the kid to come here so I want that to be his decision, but it’s hard to knock a kid for waiting to see who is coaching his hometown school. He’s from Charlottesville, and is a lifelong fan of UVA, went to school with Bennett’s kid, and has known Sanchez for over a decade. No one would be winning with the current roster there. Bennett left a pretty bare cupboard. I know you doubted that Sanchez was a viable candidate, but he has them playing way above their talent and he’s the favorite for the job. I don’t have a pov on who coaches UVA outside wanting the decision to work in our favor. I’m sure that’s your position too. As for Mallory, I’ll be disappointed if he goes to UVA, but that won’t lead to me believing he made the wrong decision for his life and future.

Does it appear most of our additions will be from the portal?

That’s going to be the new normal until salary caps are added, transfer rules are modified, and Congress creates some new laws. Otherwise, there won’t be too many risks taken on one-and-done high school players. And investing in lower ranked high school recruits comes with the high probability that they will transfer after being developed.

Unless he just doesn’t think he can handle being away from home then I think it’s pretty fair to say opting for Virginia over some of his other options is definitely a questionable life/future decision when it comes to hoops.

Again, I don't read this as "baby needs his blanket". A hometown kid going to his hometown program, which happens to be a highly lauded and reputable program in a top conference isn't necessarily a bad (hoops or otherwise) choice. We all celebrated Lanier's lifetime love of UT, connection to Barnes and his values etc. We may or may not have been his best hoops choice or money choice, but we all refunded his proximity and fandom and cheered for him to "stay home". UVA is one of the best educations in the country. They won a basketball national championship recently. Sanchez isn't proven at this level, but he definitely isn't proven to fail in the future either. You and I are biased. I obviously think he should come here, but there's some heavy bias in that opinion.

Not anymore, or even close to it, what’re they 6th best? And I don’t think comparing Tennessee to Virginia of late is even remotely close from a hoops standpoint, especially given the coaching change, nobody really batted an eye when he committed to Bennett, but this is different. A case can be made for him to stay home, and if that’s what is most important to him above all else is to stay home and play for UVA then nobody can fault him, but it also begs the question why even decommit if you’re determined to just go there pretty much regardless.

Like I said if that’s where his head is at and what’s most important to him then sure, Tennessee had plenty of local kids in football spurn staying home and playing for their childhood favorite school to go to a more stable and better program, and most benefited from that “business” decision.

You’re being reductive. Obviously different schools have different recruiting pitches. If I’m UVA I’m pitching the future, the recent successes, Sanchez connection to Bennett, and dismissing Barnes as a guy who is about to retire, and a program who is about to lose a huge chunk of talent with no signed replacements. If I’m UT, I’m pitching Barnes as a hall of fame winner, a guy who’ll be here for five years and developed guards like no other coach. What’s true in those pitches is debatable. Again, we’re biased. Most 18 year olds are susceptible to “we can build a championship here” and also believe they can make a difference. That becomes particularly true of the team you’ve followed since childhood, that recently won a championship. I said the ACC is “a” top conference not “the” top conference. There’s a distinction. He isn’t deciding between Wichita State and us. UVA believes they’re a better program than we are. UT, You and I believe the opposite. I coincidentally believe we’re right, but I also think this kid might not get four years of coaching from Barnes. A huge part of my/your perspective is based on him being here.

So reading the tea leaves are most likely to least likely to commit to vols Burries, Mallory, Ament?

Burries delaying scares me, but he all but told the coaches he’s coming here on his visit. They were highly optimistic a week ago. Mallory is a strong lean to us if he can get over the hometown UVA pull. Barring a miracle, Ament isn’t coming here.

If I’m his agent, I’d have him decommit and continue to negotiate the market for NIL$. Virginia will always take him. By decommiting he brings more teams into the bidding room. He also may find he likes another program better after the added exposure. Just no downside for him to remain available at this point. JMO

Mallory decommitted in October. Your agent plan needs time travel to work.

I didn’t infer that as being what his agent did? Only stated that if I were his agent, I would advise him to not commit to Virginia at this time even if he thought that was where he wanted to be?

You said you’d have him decommit. I’m just noting that he already did, in October.

I get it, to me 100 unbiased people look at the situation and say Tennessee is the better option, if Barnes retires you can transfer whenever you want now. I get kids are naive and will believe the coach at Vanderbilt saying come here to build a national champion football team, but typically there’s some more intelligent folks involved who can see what is probable and what is not. As I’ve said, if the kid is dead set on staying close to home then there’s nothing you can do about it. Would’ve liked our staff to not wasted our time considering Knoxville wasn’t suddenly going to get closer to home, but again, I digress. Let Mallory go to UVA and bring in Zyree Collins for all I care.

For the record, I hear we’re very much in it for Mallory. I think we’ll get his ear again after UVA chooses a coach. He’s a needed piece and I’d love to have him.

Hoover coach Scott Ware calls star forward DeWayne Brown a “Tennessee kind of player.” The 6-foot-9 senior helped power the Bucs to their third straight Class 7A state title Saturday night at Birmingham’s Legacy Arena. The Vols’ signee had a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds to go along with 5 blocked shots in Hoover’s 66-56 victory over Florence. He was named the tournament MVP.

“He’s going to be really good because his basketball IQ is off the charts,” Ware said of Brown’s college potential. “He’s got an old-school game. He’s not a high-flyer. He’s really worked on his shots, so he can extend out on the floor. He’s a Tennessee kind of a player. He fits in well with what they try to do. I expect big things out of DeWayne. His body is going to keep getting better and better.”

Why Hoover All-State forward DeWayne Brown is a ‘Tennessee kind of player’

In the semifinals game against Central-Phenix, Brown led the Bucs with 27 points, 15 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. He made 13-of-14 shots and his only free throw. “We want to get him the ball, for sure,” Ware said. “If you play him 1-on-1, good luck to most people.”
