2025 Transfer Portal Thread

I’m glad we lead, but it’s so annoying how we prioritize football to put most of our NIL into. We aren’t winning a championship anytime soon, and our recruit classes will always be in the 8-12 range with 8-10 win seasons.

Wish we would just go ahead and prioritize basketball/baseball
If its anything I think Kentucky is out completely... suck it Kentucky.... lol

From Basilio's blog this morning:

Tennessee Basketball Recruiting Update:

The Vols feel very good about Isaac McKneely from Virginia. He's got a major that doesn't quite translate to anything in UT's catalog so that's the hold up right now. Therefore, Tennessee feels like this one is going to get done. Rick Barnes visited yesterday with Ja'Kobi Gillespie in College Park, Maryland. Barnes hasn't been feeling his best, but he greatly gutted out yesterday's visit showing a real sense of urgency. My understanding is that Tennessee is not only involved with Gillespie (who's going to be super expensive), but they're also talking to another member of the Crab Five ... Guard Rodney Rice is now officially on Tennessee's radar as they're exploring adding another scorer to the mix. Rice averaged 13.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season for the Crab Five after sitting out the season before. Prior to that Rice played at Virginia Tech. It should be pointed out that his ex-head coach Kevin Willard is trying to get him for his new stop at Villanova.
Meanwhile Tennessee has some clarity internally on what they're going to do on the front court. For now, it looks like Phillips, Okpara and Estrella are now all three sticking around for 2025-26. Estrella is interesting in that he's a potentially high-end player who's fighting injuries. If his body cooperates this could be a real plus for the Vols. I keep hearing that Rick Barnes is resolute in making Tennessee a more offensive basketball team going forward. Toward that end it's believed that the Vols will hold spots at the end of the roster for both Zeigler and Gainey while it appears Mashack has played his final game in a Tennessee uniform ... One other development is that forward Elyjah Freeman of local D-2 powerhouse Lincoln Memorial University is now involved with Indiana who are believed to be poised to throw stupid money at him. This is the essence of the portal. The concept of Freeman in Knoxville isn't dead by any means but Indiana's emergence is worth noting here.

You'd have to think that Willard's questionable behavior during the tournament would detract from the potential of following him to Nova.

It takes a full year to make curriculum changes, moves at a pace comparable to the DMV

The problem is if he wants to get an actual education and we don't have the professors who can provide it. You can't just hand-wave expertise into existence. Not usually up there in the concerns for athletes but some of the guys are smart enough to know that the majority of their future won't be in sports.

Having went to UT, their structure on how they do things (school wise) is actually stupid.

When I was there, if I wanted to take Latin as my foreign language, then I could only take it in the fall and not in spring which meant I had to go to school an extra year due to that.

I think recently they let anyone take sign language as their foreign language….wish I was around for that lol

Wonder why they're holding spots for ZZ and Gainey but not Mashack? Does Mashack not want to come back if the opportunity happens?

Mashack doesn’t add anything to this team besides stamina at this point. Great on defense but we keep hearing we want more offense, more offense and Shack doesn’t fit into that nor will he ever.

I just thought with his close relationship with RB that he would be welcomed back based on that alone.

Its a difficult decision because if Mashack wanted to return, then Barnes would potentially have to tell him no in favor of somebody with better offensive capabilities.

I love Mashack and appreciate his time here, but we need somebody who can generate a little more offense when playing 35 minutes a night. He had his moments, especially that awesome buzzer beater 3 against Bama, but you could tell most opposing defenses sort of ignored him when he had the ball because he is not a scoring threat.

Willard's "Behavior" should only be something for the admin to really have issues with.... Willard airing laundry about Maryland being a crap school in terms of its commitment to basketball with resources and NIL is essentially taking the players side.

Not sure what he apparently did that was somehow hurtful or harmful to the actual players.

Well ZZ gives Barnes consistency with running the offense, Gainey gets another year to improve his up trend in scoring.

Mashack is a great defender, but is a body on the floor that isn't a scoring threat away from the rim.

I am with you on this, but football pays the bills. Other sports make money, but football is where the real bacon for the AD comes from. They have to be at least competitive in that sport to maximize ROI.

I am all for putting our chips down to win a natty in basketball.

Need an NIL fund for professors

In my book, making it clear that you plan on leaving and skipping team functions/meals while your team is still playing in the NCAA tournament is a minus

You’re talking about the best perimeter defender in the country and, just incidentally, a 4 year starter at the university you claim to support like he’s a scrub getting picked last in a YMCA game. Have some shame, I beg

Yeah, we run into a lot of issues with having enough instructional capacity, which limits how often we can offer courses. It essentially arises from doing things on the cheap and not having as many faculty/staff as we like.

He’s a smidge better than JJJ….and since you like statistics, Mr. Evan Miya :)

JJJ: 8.4 / 6.4 / 1.9
40% FG
34% 3PT
83% FT
1.4 steals per game

Shack: 6.0 / 4.2 / 1.5
45% FG
35% 3PT
72% FT
1.7 steals per game
