Just to be clear, it’s not a ruling, it would be a new rule change. At this point, the rule change is not even been proposed. A proposal that, if made, would not be voted on until next January. There is absolutely no guarantee that the rule change will even be proposed, though many in the industry expect that it will be.
It would not necessarily guarantee an extra year of eligibility to everyone currently in school. The expected proposal is to convert the current five years to play four seasons calendar to five years to play five seasons, eliminating redshirts and medical hardship waivers. Everyone’s career would be capped at five school years, regardless of injury or playing time.
